Hardcover. Condition: Very Good minus. First Edition. dated MDCLIII. Bookplate of Latin scholar Francis Philip Nash on front pastdown. 24mo - 5 1/4" tall, 461 pages, original vellum covers. "Excudbat Severynus Matthaei." This small volume of letters of the Roman Consul and orator, collected by his son, on various subjects including religion and the ancient gods, and traditions of Rome. With an epitaph to his gods, as the barbarians and Christianity overwhelmed his world. In full vellum, the surface lightly soiled, binding sturdy, with a few small breaks.This copy is in very good condition overall, the hinges and binding both solid, and the rag paper lightly yellowed and still supple. BUT, the primary defect is the fountain pen underlining throughout, carefully marked as if by a student of Latin, with root words double underlined. This marking does not obscure the text, and actually makes the small print easier to follow, which may have been the purpose.…
