Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. An excellent first edition of Peter Martins' acclaimed autobiographical memoir, published during the height of his career as principal dancer with the New York City Ballet. Written with dance critic and author Robert Cornfield, this richly illustrate…d volume chronicles Martins' journey from his childhood and training at the Royal Danish Ballet School to his rise as one of George Balanchine's foremost dancers and an emerging choreographer. The text offers an engaging behind-the-scenes look at life within one of the world's premier ballet companies, with thoughtful reflections on artistry, rehearsal, performance, and choreography. A comprehensive chronology of Martins' repertoire and choreographed works makes the volume equally valuable as a reference for ballet historians and collectors. Profusely illustrated throughout with striking black-and-white and full-color photographs - including numerous images by renowned dance photographer Steven Caras - the book captures Martins performing alongside many of the great dancers of the era, including Suzanne Farrell, Merrill Ashley, Patricia McBride, Heather Watts, and others. This copy also includes a contemporary gift inscription on the front free endpaper reading 'Xmas. 1982' from Robin & Paul to Carl. The inscription is personal in nature and is not by Peter Martins. The book is in Very Good+ condition. The binding remains tight and square, with clean interior pages and only light, age-appropriate toning to the endpapers. Aside from the gift inscription, no writing or markings were observed. The original cloth-backed boards are clean and attractive, displaying only minor shelf wear, a faint spot near the upper rear board, and a small bump with light rubbing at the lower rear corner. The original dust jacket is in Very Good condition, complete and not price-clipped, exhibiting moderate edge wear, several short closed tears and creases at the spine ends and corners, light surface rubbing, and age toning with some moisture staining visible on the reverse of the jacket that does not significantly affect its front presentation. Overall, this is a handsome, collectible first edition of an important twentieth-century ballet memoir. Peter Martins (born 1946) is a Danish-born ballet dancer, choreographer, and former Ballet Master in Chief of the New York City Ballet. After training at the Royal Danish Ballet School, he joined the New York City Ballet in 1970, where he became one of George Balanchine's most celebrated principal dancers. Following Balanchine's death, Martins assumed a leading artistic role within the company and helped shape American ballet for decades. Far from Denmark provides an intimate account of his early life, artistic philosophy, and experiences performing with one of the world's most prestigious ballet companies, making it an enduring resource for ballet enthusiasts, dance historians, and collectors alike.
