Some of the books are among the most famous in the language, the Bible, Chapman's Homer, Raleigh's History of the World, Smoth's History of Viriginia, Hobbe's Leviathan. Bibliographical notes. Abbreviations, and Index. An Excellent copy. "When the title page came along in the 16th century, it was just letter-press. But as the 16th century wore on, title pages grew more ambitious, and were engraved, with the title enclosed in a structure modelled on the facades of buildings of the time. The panels of these fantastic inky edifices included allegorical figures (quite often well-endowed ladies) , pithy sayings and emblematic vignettes. It's not always easy to work out who was responsible for what. The designs are often signed with a name or names followed by a phrase (in Latin and abbreviated) which at least in theory explained what that person did delineavit (drew) , invenit (devised) , sculpsit (engraved) or just fecit (made) but in practice the roles are blurred. This, the best book on the subject, is on English title pages. The authors show that in England it was often the author who devised the design." See Images; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall, ; 256 pages; Signed by One Author.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 8vo (24 cm), VIII, 248 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (dj clipped, blind collector's stamp on the half-title). The title page was once the most expensive and elaborate part of a book. With advances in printing technology and changing reading practices, it became a space for innovative desi…gn, illustration, and audience engagement. The Comely Frontispiece offers the first comprehensive study of the title page's role in the development of English Renaissance books. Karen L. Corbett and Stephen Lightbown draw on extensive evidence to explore the purpose of these elements, challenging the traditional view that they were merely advertisements. They demonstrate how title pages conveyed ideas about the status and ambitions of authors and printers and influenced readers' perceptions of a book. By placing title pages at the heart of early modern England's literary culture, this book highlights their essential role in the evolution of the printed book.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Many of the major books published in the years between 1550 and 1660 - one of the richest periods in English culture - were embellished with an elaborate engraved title-page. The Comely Frontispiece (1979) selects twenty such title-pages which represent the different branches of learning -…theology, philosophy, history, poetry, medicine - and explains that these pages were not mere ornaments but visual epitomes in the emblematic mode of significant aspects of the book. They were designed by the author and explore the whole world of Renaissance emblematic imagery on which they drew. We see how famous figures used the engraved title-page to express the ideas they had in mind when their books were conceived and written - ideas about the Church and society, philosophy and manners, poetry and drama, science and medicine - so that it affords us an exceptional insight into what they themselves considered was important or attractive in their own creations.
