Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor. First Edition. Very scarce memoir of the travelling adventures of an Italian street musician/organ grinder/accordian player/wandering minstrel. Contains 24 chapters. Chapter titles include I Begin Life in Italy, I Go to England and Begin my Adventures, I Become a Slave, I Go to Prison and Dream a Dream, Floods and a Monkey, Barrel Organ Days, I Have my Fill of Fighting, Italy Once More, A Taste of Army Life, I Become a Detective, I Marry and Settle Down. From page following contents: "These memoirs are published, in general, as they were written. The publishers do not vouch for the author's accuracy in matters of fact". Apparently Cagliardo Coraggioso was the pen name of Italian immigrant Eugenio D'Agostino. From Rootsweb, Ango-Italian Archives, by Leonard D'Agostino: "Professor John Zucchi of Toronto wrote 'Little Slaves of the Harp: Italian Child Musicians in Nineteenth-Century Paris, London & New York'. Published in 1992 by McGill Queens University Press, Montreal. Professor Zucchi uses, as a reference, my grandfather, Eugenio D'Agostino's autobiography 'Wandering Minstrel' by Cagliardo Coraggioso (his pen name) published in 1938 by Oxford Universty Press. I quote from 'Little Slaves' - 'Unfortunately these same individuals and groups (child minstrels) have left us virtually all the extent documentation; the musicians were for the most part illiterate and left virtually no written records for posterity. 'Wandering Minstrel' the autobiography of a street violinist in Britain, who used the name of Cagliardo Coraggioso, is the great exception.' My grandfather, Eugenio, became a very successful caterer with an Amercan style cafe and a band playing Sundays. His written English was poor and the original manuscript is in the different handwriting of his waitresses. His accountant helped him to edit it. It's about a band of child musicians from Picinisco led by a cruel 'padrone' and their adventures throughout England and Wales. Hard to find a copy. One is in the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh". Volume is printed in Great Britain by The Camelot Press, London. Bound in original yellow cloth with black lettering to spine. Only two portions of the dustjacket are remaining - the front panel & the rear inner flap - held around the book with a clear Brodart cover. The b&w pictorial front panel has chips all the way around, & the rear inner flap is unprinted. Spotting to edge of book block, marginal foxing, slightly cocked, small bookseller's label to front pastedown, remnants only of dustjacket as described, otherwise a nice clean tight solid hardcover copy of a scarce book. 258pp. RARE. SB-16.…
