This 16.4 pound book was popularly known as Cope's Bible, since few people had ever seen so massive a volume except possibly on the lectern in a church. 29.5 x 22.5 cm, , xxxiv, 1009 pp., Includes 40 textural woodcuts, 134 full page plates, of which three are double page and three are foldi…ng each with a leaf of text and verso blank. Text in near fine condition still solidly bound with the original blind stamped and gilt lettered brown cloth cover tenuously attached with seriously damaged hinges. Much handling would tear it free. Corners bumped, spine ends and sides worn. This was the first encyclopedic work on the Tertiary period of the Western region. It contributed to the wider interest in paleontology and acceptance of evolution.
