Conze traces the evolution of Buddhism from its Indian beginnings through Mahayana and Zen, explaining central doctrines such as Nirvana, Dharma, and Sunyata (emptiness) with intellectual rigor and literary grace. The preface by Arthur Waley hails it as 'so comprehensive, and at the same time so easy and readable, an account of Buddhism as to be found in any language.' This Torchbook issue, TB 58, was printed in the United States and features a striking cover design by Alex Tsao.
