Legatura coeva in tutta pergamena floscia, titolo manoscritto al dorso visibile sotto il finto tassello, di poco posteriore, con titoli in oro. Marca dello stampatore al frontespizio e in fine tra il registro e la nota tipografica ripetuta. Carattere romano e un p…oco di corsivo. Capilettera ornati, testatine e finalini silografici. Qualche nota manoscritta in margine e antica nota di possesso di Giovanni Battista Astolfi al colophon. Piccola galleria di tarlo al margine bianco disopra di alcune carte. Lievi aloni marginali occasionali e sporadiche arrossature di minima entità. Tarlatura al piatto disotto, qualche macchietta. Una copia croccante e molto pulita all'interno. Ottimo esemplare in attraente legatura del tempo. Traduzione italiane della celebre opera di Philippe de Commines (1445-1511), che fu gentiluomo, cronista e politico francese di origine fiamminga. Dopo una lunga carriera, ritiratosi a vita privata, compose le sue Mémoires in otto libri, di cui i primi sei sono la Cronaca di Luigi XI e gli ultimi due la Cronaca di Carlo VIII. Grazie a questi libri viene considerato uno dei padri degli storici moderni, per la sua obiettività e la profondità psicologica dei suoi personaggi posti in relazione con i fatti politici in un gioco di cause, effetti e previsioni. Per quanto riguarda la traduzione del genovese Lorenzo Costa, che studiò legge a Padova, poi a Parigi, Avignone e Tolosa, e con la Francia mantenne sempre uno stretto legame, si veda il DBI Treccani: "Legata probabilmente al nuovo clima culturale venutosi a creare in città dopo la fondazione dell'Accademia degli Addormentati (1587) fu la nuova iniziativa letteraria del C., la traduzione dei Mémoires di Comines, dedicata al marchese Ambrogio Spinola (Delle memorie di Filippo di Comines. tradotte dal Mag.co L. Conti, Genova 1594). Nella dedica il C., dopo un parallelo tra Tacito e Comines, annuncia un suo volume di discorsi che non sono per altro rimasti. Una traduzione questa di Comines che, a differenza della precedente parziale di Nicolas Raince, ebbe un notevole successo editoriale". Fu infatti ristampata, per esempio, a Milano (1610), Brescia (1612 e 1613), Venezia (1613), Milano (1623) e Venezia (1640). Questa bella seconda edizione bresciana è dedicata a Ranuccio Gambara, letterato e membro della nobiltà locale.

Contemporary pastepaper boards with original sewing along the joints, edges sprinkled red. Signed manuscript note dated from: "Malta, 2 December 1839" laid-down on th…e front pastedown, identifying this copy as belonging to: "the Library of the Knights of Malta of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem." Two small laid-paper strips are pasted over an early ownership signature on the title page to the left and right of the woodcut vignette. The pastepaper binding is frayed at the edges and torn along the front joint, both free endpapers are nearly detached, modest intermittent old dampstaining and some worming to the top margin, good. The scarce, first Italian edition of Commynes celebrated *Mémoires* in a contemporary binding, and with a compelling provenance.
