Per handwriting that matches online exemplars, the inscriber is Dr. Howard Atwood Kelly (1858-1943), an American gynecologist credited with establishing gynecology as a medical specialty and who, with William Osler, William Halsted, and William Welch, founded Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland in 1889. Timothy Abbott Conrad was an American geologist and malacologist who worked in New York, where he was one of the state geologists and a contributor the the New York Geological Survey in the 1830s. He was paleontologist of the New York Geological Survey from 1838 until 1841, and wrote their annual reports. He also made the reports of paleontological discoveries in the Pacific Railroad Survey and the Mexican Boundary Survey. He was a frequent contributor to journals such as the American Journal of Science and Journal of the Philadelphia Academy of Science and oversaw the posthumous publication of the last part of Thomas Say's "American Conchology."
