James Francis Calvert (1920-2009), served in the United States Navy where he commanded USS Skate, the third nuclear submarine commissioned and the second submarine to reach the North Pole, which became the first to surface at the pole. 'Skate' surfaced at the North Pole on 17th March 1959 to commit the ashes of the famed explorer Sir Hubert Wilkins to the Arctic waste. Calvert later served as the 46th superintendent of the United States Naval Academy. Jacket by Abner Graboff (illustrator).

The story of the USS Skate, the atomic submarine sent north to answer the question of whether a submarine could safely operate in the Arctic Ocean, written by her commander, James Calvert, who directed both history-making voyages in 1958 and 1959 which proved that a submarine could safely navigate under the shifting ice pack and then surface through the frozen polar ice cap.
