The fort on the border of Belguim, Holland and Germany was the keystone of the Belguim defense. Using gliderborne troops for the first time in history 78 German troops were able to take the fortress manned by roughly 800 troops in a matter of hours. This break in the line led to the capitulation of Belgium and eventually the British evacuation at Dunkirk. Written by a US WWII Glider Infantry Regimental Commander.
