A unique custom-made copy with many additional pages of illustrations and hand-written notes tipped in. Black and white illustrations feature historical military costume, equipment and cartoons. The first and second volume of Britain's Sea Soldiers: A History of the Royal Marines and their Predecessors and of Their Services in Action, Ashore and Afloat, the first official history of the elite royal regiment, written by Colonel Cyril Field. Originally complete in two volumes, with a third volume added by Blumberg three years later. In the publisher's original quarter buckram with blue cloth. Volume I contains a bookplate of the Union Club for local marines at Deal and Walmer to the front pastedown. Volume I contains a portrait frontispiece of Field, all eleven colour plates, and all fifty-five plates in half-tone, while Volume II contains a colour frontispiece, all all eleven other colour plates, and all forty-four plates in half-tone. Most colour illustrations are by French painter and lithographer Victor Huen. Collated complete. Field conducts a comprehensive narrative of the engagements and developments relating to the elite British military regiment, including passages relating to indivudal members, as well as details of the operations they conducted in each conflict ever since the establishment of the 'Maritime Regiment' under Charles II. - Volume I: Including Antiquity and Middle Ages (Introduction), War of Succession, American War of Independence, and Napoleonic Wars amongst others (1664-1815). - Volume II: Including Carlist War, Ashantee Wars, Crimean Wars, the Opium Wars and the Boxer rebellions amongst others (1816-1914). In the publisher's original quarter buckram with blue cloth. Externally, fading and mottling to boards, heaviest to the extremities. Fading to spines and browning to buckram joints.
