First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Perth, Trustees of the Public Library, Museum, and Art Gallery of Western Australia, 1922. Octavo, xvi, 221 pages with 53 illustrations (from photographs) and 7 maps and plans plus a large folding frontispiece and 3 folding maps and an errata slip (tipped in on page 175). Olive cloth (with the battalion colour patch - white over blue - printed on the front panel) slightly marked and flecked; spine a little sunned, with slight wear to the ends; flyleaves offset; tear along one fold in the frontispiece neatly sealed (albeit with clear tape on the verso); small light blemish to the bottom margin of one panel of the frontispiece and the first four leaves (a drop of water was the culprit); trifling signs of age and use; overall, an excellent copy. Colonel Herbert Collett was the first Commanding Officer of the 28th Battalion. The last leaf (verso blank) is a 'Compiler's Note' which goes a long way to explaining why no other volume was published. It states in part that 'For the second volume a good deal of material is already in hand, but success cannot be ensured unless ex-members will co-operate with the 28th Battalion Association Committee and the Compiler'. Dornbusch 383; Fielding and O'Neill, page 228; Trigellis-Smith 227.
