As asserted in the preface by John Robert Colombo, he hoped that, "The Varsity Chapbook will shatter, once and for all, the illusion that, of the Canadian universities, only McGill is producing its quota of top-flight poets." Robert John Colombo, editor of the collection, was a significant fixture of Canadian literature and poetry. He was a Canadian writer, editor, and poet who produced over 200 works. Having attended the University of Toronto, he founded Hawkshead Press, which published Margaret Atwood's first collection of poetry in 1963, and went on to fill editorial positions in important Canadian publishing houses. This copy has another connection with Canadian poetry, having belonged to the library of Canadian poet Harry Howith (1934-2014). Together, these two volumes contain some 400 native songssongs of love and war, songs of hunting and fishing, chiefs' songs and status songs, chants and charms, prayers and curses, rites of initiation and healing, lullabies and dirges. Authentic texts were recorded over many generations by explorers, missionaries, traders and travellers, and assembled with painstaking care by linguists and ethnologists. The second volume contains the songs of six main linguistic groups, the Salishan, Wakashan, Tsimshian, Haidan, Koluschan and Chinookan. The songs were selected and arranged by John Robert Colombo, who also provided an informative and entertaining introduction, together with extensive notes and a bibliography. Colombo, who published Poems of the Inuit under the Oberon imprint in 1981, has been a national figure since the appearance of Colombo's Canadian Quotations. It includes written pieces by students at the University of Toronto. Notable contributors included Janet Somerville ("From a Den of Thieves), who has written for Now magazine and the Toronto Star book pages; Canadian writer and editor Henry Beissel (1929-2025) ("Early Death"); John Robert Colombo ("There are no others"), who in addition to his success as a career, played a significant role in the history of Canadian letters as a publisher and editor; Alexander Leggatt, a noted Shakespeare scholar ("Stratford"); and Edward A. Lacey ("Delicado"), a Canadian poet and translator. This copy is in Very Good condition. There is some slight chipping and creasing to the edges, and a slight scuffing on the back cover. There is a name written in pencil on the front cover. Internally, there are no blemishes.
