C'est une pièce majeure du classicisme de Weimar où Goethe revisite le mythe grec pour en faire un drame de l'humanité et de la vérité, plutôt que de la fatalité. Concernant la traduction de Pierre Colombier, elle occupe une place particulière. Colombier était un germaniste reconnu et son travail sur Goethe (publié notamment chez Aubier-Montaigne) est souvent salué pour sa rigueur philologique. Contrairement à certaines traductions plus anciennes qui cherchaient à "franciser" le style de Goethe, Colombier s'attache à respecter la structure de la pensée allemande. Il parvient à conserver la noblesse du ton (le Stil) tout en rendant le texte accessible pour une étude universitaire ou théâtrale.
