HB,421 pp,Portraits and Plans throughout, 2002 N&MP Reprint of 1891 Deluxe Edition Received knowledge has it that the Indian Mutiny was the result of the greased cartridge which appeared at the beginning of 1857, but in truth trouble was simmering among the Bengal Army native soldiers well before, and the cartridges were used as a catalyst. Conspirators spread the news that the new cartridge was smeared with the fat of a pig or a cow, the one hateful to the Mohammedans the other the sacred animal of the Hindus. In fact the cartridges had not even been issued to the men before the revolt, but the rumours had been well spread by the trouble makersand had caused serious discontent. Even the main players in the Mutiny such as Sir John Lawrence failed to detect the root causes. In this book the author, an accomplished military historian with special knowledge of India, seeks to explain what was really behind the violent uprising., based on personal knowledge and personal observation. In January 1856 Sir James Outram crossed the Ganges and, on behalf of the British East india Company, annexed the territory of Oudh and deposed its king. This, Malleson noted and reported to his superiors, caused considerable anger among his sepoys and he foresaw this would spread; he was laughed out of court. Further factors were the abysmal terms of service, poor pay and lack of promotion prospects (promotion was based on seniority, merit counted for nothing and this was still the case even among British officers in 1914). These first few chapters tracing the origins and the spread of unrest leading to the storm are well worth reading, and writing a hundred years later David Saul in his recent history of the Mutiny concurs with Mallesonâ s findings. There follows a very readable and authoritative account of the Mutiny with detailed descriptions of the actions with the parts played by individuals and regiments.

xi+614 pp 3 maps 2021 N&MP Reprint of the 1893 Original Revised Edition Published Price £25 Six decades after the establishment of foreign trading companies such as the â British East Indiaâ and the â Dutch East Indiaâ , France too entered India with a business proposal and later founded the â French East India Companyâ in 1664.ÂIn 1673, the foundation of Pondicherry was laid by the French when they took over the area of Pondicherry, which was under the Sultan of Bijapur until then. The French administration started a number of ambitious projects in 1674, which aimed at transforming Pondicherry from a small village to a flourishing port town. However, the French were in constant conflict with the English and the Dutch as all three European maritime powers knew the potential of a place like Pondicherry. The Dutch managed to capture Pondicherry in 1693 and expanded its fortifications. However, in 1697, a series of agreements called the â Treaty of Ryswickâ were signed between the French and the Dutch, which made sure the French regained Pondicherry in 1699.Despite having a treaty with the British, the French continued to seek ways to expand their presence in India. Hence, they increased their business activities in Bengal, which allowed them to get closer to the Nawab of Bengal. Since the French were not confident of defeating the British by themselves, they encouraged the then Nawab of Bengal Siraj ud-Daulah to fight the British in order to capture â Fort Williamâ in Calcutta. This instigation by the French led to the famous â Battle of Plasseyâ in the year 1757. Unfortunately, Siraj ud-Daulah and his French allies were defeated comprehensively by the British, which marked the end of Nawabâ s rule in Bengal and the advent of British rule in the region. France reacted by sending a general named Lally-Tollendal to drive the British out of India and to regain their lost possessions. After his arrival in 1758, Lally achieved success almost immediately as he managed to destroy â Fort St. Davidâ in Cuddalore district, which was under British control. However, Lallyâ s strategic mistakes cost the French dearly as they lost their hold over South India as well. The British sieged Pondicherry in 1760, which led to the arrest and the subsequent execution of Lally. But Pondicherry was returned to the French as per a peace treaty, which was signed in the year 1763.

Book
Softback xxxii+495 pp with 1 map & 3 plans 2021 N&MP Reprint of the 1888 3rd Edition Published Price £28 The author was a voluminous writer, his first work to attract attention being the famous â Red Pamphletâ , published at Calcutta in 1857, when the Sepoy Mutiny was at its height. Among his other books, the most valuable are History of the French in India (2nd ed., 1893) and The Decisive Battles of India (3rd ed., 1888).Each chapter covers a decisive battle from 1746 to 1849, which finally led to the gradual annexation of India to the British Empire. The Battle of St Thomà in 1746, between the French and the Nawab of the Carnatic, opened the infinite possibilities of trade and treasure in the Indian sub-continent to the Europeans. It also brought the military genius of Robert Clive of the British East India Company and Joseph-François Dupleix face to face, and from there followed over a decade of conflict between the French and the British, until Clive's decisive victory over the French at the Battle of Plassey in 1757. Also included, among others, is the Battle of Assaye in 1803 where Arthur Wellesley learnt his trade, the Battle of Bharatpur in 1805 between the British and the Maharaja Ranjit Singh, and the Battle of Sobraon in 1846, the final battle of the First Anglo-Sikh War. This excellent Victorian history of these decisive battles describes the causes, the complicated political alliances behind each encounter, the main protagonists, the strategies and tactics, and the final consequences of each conflict.
