Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. An important scholarly collection of Isaac Newton's writings on natural philosophy, edited and introduced by distinguished historian of science I. Bernard Cohen, with assistance from Robert E. Schofield. First published by Harvard University Press in 1958, this volume gathers Newton's scientific papers and correspondence beyond his more readily available Principia and Opticks. The contents include Newton's contributions to the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society; his optical papers and exchanges with contemporary critics; his letter to Robert Boyle concerning the "De Natura Acidorum"; his letters to Richard Bentley; material connected with the Boyle Lectures; Edmond Halley's publications concerning the Principia; and an early published biography of Newton. Explanatory prefaces are supplied by Marie Boas, Charles Coulston Gillispie, Thomas S. Kuhn, and Perry Miller. Much of the original material is reproduced in facsimile, preserving early typography, diagrams, and the appearance of the historical documents. Condition: Very Good. Original rust-colored cloth binding with black spine label and gilt lettering. Spine lettering remains bright and clearly legible, with light rubbing, minor shelf wear, and a few small surface marks. Text-block edges show mild age toning and dusting. Binding appears firm and square. Interior pages are clean and well preserved, with no ownership inscription, underlining, or annotation observed in the photographed portions. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait, facsimile title pages, original scientific papers, correspondence, and diagrams. Lacking the original dust jacket. The first edition contains 501 pages and was substantially revised and expanded for a second edition in 1978. The 1958 edition remains collectible both as the original appearance of Cohen's influential compilation and as an important source collection in Newtonian studies. This volume has strong appeal for collections devoted to Isaac Newton, optics, gravitation, astronomy, the Royal Society, the Scientific Revolution, and the history and philosophy of science. Index of Eighty-third Critical Bibliography This is the official quarterly journal of the History of Science Society. This issue contains an article by Thomas Kuhn! From Wikipedia "Thomas Samuel Kuhn ( / ku n/; July 18, 1922 June 17, 1996) was an American physicist and philosopher who wrote extensively on the history of science and developed several important notions in the sociology and philosophy of science. Kuhn has made several notable claims concerning the progress of knowledge: that science undergoes periodic "paradigm shifts" instead of progressing in a linear and continuous way; that these paradigm shifts open up new approaches to understanding that scientists would never have considered valid before; and that scientists can never divorce their subjective perspective from their work. Competing paradigms are frequently incommensurable; that is, they are competing accounts of reality which cannot be coherently reconciled. Thus, our comprehension of science can never rely on full "objectivity"; we must account for subjective perspectives as well. His best known book is The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962)." Isis George Sarton founded Isis, the premier international journal dedicated to the history of science, in Belgium in 1912. After World War I, Sarton and the journal moved to the United States. Today, Isis is edited by Bernard Lightman at York University, and published and distributed quarterly by the University of Chicago Press. Each issue begins with topical articles providing in-depth coverage of leading issues in the history of science. News of the Profession and an Essay Review follow. Issues conclude with an extensive collection of book reviews, covering all fields and time periods in the history of science. This issued includes the Eighty-third Critical Bibliography of the History of Sciences and Its Cultural Influences. Good. No dust jacket as issued. Cover has some wear and soiling.…
