Library catalog records confirm the authors as Blanche Cognet and Marcelle Janet, the 1968 Belin publication, Pierre Clarac series, and 311-page extent. This was the second portion of Cognet and Janet's long-running Apprendre a ecrire French-language instructional series; earlier versions of the work were already in circulation by the 1930s. The 1968 revision teaches vocabulary and composition through literary extracts, exercises, and visual material, drawing upon writers including Moliere, Proust, Rousseau, Prevert, Jules Renard, Anatole France, Musset, Lamartine, and others. The photographs show particularly attractive period reproductions after Velazquez and Durer. What transforms this copy is its surviving Joseph Gibert retail presentation. Over the publisher's striking blue, white, and orange boards remains a removable cream paper wrapper printed for Librairies Joseph Gibert, advertising its classical, general, foreign, scientific, technical, and fine-arts departments at 26/30 Boulevard Saint-Michel and adjacent Left Bank addresses. Unfolded, the wrapper becomes a wonderful piece of mid-century Parisian bookselling ephemera, with architectural illustrations of the Gibert premises and advertising for its secondhand-book purchasing service. This is especially appropriate provenance for a schoolbook: Joseph Gibert began as a Paris bouquiniste in 1886 and built his business particularly around used schoolbooks: after the family business divided in 1929, Gibert Joseph established itself at 30 Boulevard Saint-Michel and became a fixture of the student-oriented Latin Quarter book trade. Even better, an additional Joseph Gibert advertising piece is tipped in among the front endpapers. One side is a Bon de Garantie instructing the purchaser to retain the coupon in the book for resale or claims and advertising books, stationery, and records at 30 Boulevard St-Michel. The other side is a seasonal "Juin-Juillet-Aout / Prix d'Éte" notice offering a 10% premium on books sold back to the shop, special prices on used schoolbooks and school stationery, and exchanges through October 15 - an evocative survival of the annual French schoolbook cycle. Comparable vintage Joseph Gibert advertising blotters and school-supply promotions are now separately collected as French commercial ephemera. Together, the wrapper, guarantee notice, and summer buyback advertisement make this not merely a used French textbook but a small time capsule of the postwar Parisian student book trade. Condition: Book Very Good+; bookseller wrapper Very Good. Publisher's pictorial boards remain bright and attractive with modest edge and corner wear; binding is sound and interior generally clean with expected light age-toning. A few small pencil marks are visible beside exercises, and the title page bears a turquoise 7.00 price marking/stamp and small additional marks. The Joseph Gibert wrapper shows overall toning, handling, fold wear and some localized staining/creasing, particularly around the spine folds, but is remarkably complete, retaining both flaps and its printed architectural panels. The loose Gibert advertising piece shows expected age-toning. All Joseph Gibert material accompanies the book.…

French-language secondary-school text devoted to composition, vocabulary, grammar, style, and literary analysis, organized around sensory experience and illustrated throughout with photographs and reproductions. The volume draws examples from French literature and culture - among the photographed subjects visible here are Egyptian sculpture, Benozzo Gozzoli, Renaissance funerary monuments, and Louis Armstrong - making it an unusually visual example of mid-century French language pedagogy. The final printed leaf records Imprimerie Firmin-Didot, Mesnil-Ivry, no. 3334; depot legal: 3e trimestre 1966; no. d'editeur 3294, securely dating this printing to 1966. A later 1968 edition of Les Sensations is independently recorded, supporting identification of this as an earlier issue of this version rather than the later 1968 printing. The particularly appealing feature is the contemporary Joseph Gibert bookseller advertising dust jacket, which is not the publisher's jacket. Beneath it is Belin's striking red, gray, white, and black pictorial binding. The wrapper was evidently produced for Gibert's retail stock: the front identifies Joseph Gibert, 26-30 Boulevard Saint-Michel, Paris VIe, while the rear advertises the firm as one of Paris' major retail booksellers and stationers and depicts its two Boulevard Saint-Michel buildings beside the Odeon Metro symbol. The flaps advertise Gibert's departments, provide a neighborhood map, list provincial correspondent booksellers, and even give instructions for selling books back through S.A.C.E.L.P. This is particularly appropriate for a school textbook: Gibert's business was historically built around the trade in new and secondhand schoolbooks, and the firm expanded into 26 and 30 Boulevard Saint-Michel while serving the nearby Sorbonne/student market. A surviving Musee Carnavalet object also documents use of the same "Librairie classique Joseph Gibert, 26-30 Boulevard Saint-Michel" identity on period printed material. Condition: Very Good / Good+ bookseller wrapper. The underlying hardcover remains solid and attractive, with moderate shelf wear, rubbing and some abrasion at the lower spine/heel and lower front joint, corner wear, and light general handling. A small band of black tape observed at the spine head for unknown reasons, not removed so as to not damage the book. Interior is complete and generally clean, with expected light age/handling wear. Title page bears period bookseller stamps, including Joseph Gibert, Librairie Classique, 26-30 Boulevard St-Michel, together with a partially faded Lyon bookseller stamp and a small price notation. The scarce advertising wrapper is complete but well used: overall toning, scattered spotting/soiling, edge rubbing and creasing, small chips and tears at the spine ends and upper rear edge, and wear along folds.
