Eco was a Colombian cultural magazine published in Bogotá by the Buchholz Library and Gallery, between May 1960 and June 1984. Leading the editorial were: Else Goerner (1960-1963), Hernando Valencia Goelkel (1963-1967), José María Castellet (1964-1965), Nicolás Suescún (1967-1971), Ernesto Volkening (1971-1972) and Juan Gustavo Cobo Borda (1973-1984). Eco is significant not only for its longevity and the caliber of its contributors but also because, like "Los Nuevos" or "Mito", it united a generation of intellectuals and defined the orientation of "Western culture" within the region. Of particular note in this collection is the presence of Issue #82 (Feb. 1967), which contains the rare pre-publication fragment of Gabriel García Márquez s "Cien años de soledad" (pp. 342-366), published three months prior to the book's first edition. Important essays, critiques, and translations abound in its pages. The influence that Eco exerted on the formation of Colombian writers is remarkable, specifically through its critical theory. Key monographic issues include Nietzsche (Nos. 114-115), Hölderlin (Nos. 183-184), Brecht (Nos. 85-86), Hesse (No. 195), and the Bicentennial of Kant (No. 235). Issue #200 (1978) serves as an anthology of Latin American criticism. Regarding this, Juan Gustavo Cobo Borda recalls that the magazine provided critical monitoring of Latin American narrative. In its evolution an "inverse expansion" the magazine turned its gaze from Central European humanism inward to the continent. Contributors: Gabriel García Márquez, Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar, Mario Vargas Llosa, Octavio Paz, Alejo Carpentier, Carlos Fuentes, Álvaro Mutis, José Lezama Lima, Adolfo Bioy Casares, Severo Sarduy, Martín Heidegger, Theodor Adorno, Walter Benjamin, Hermann Hesse, Thomas Mann, Günter Grass, Heinrich Böll, Ernst Jünger, Robert Musil, Rafael Gutiérrez Girardot, Ángel Rama, Emir Rodríguez Monegal, Marta Traba, Estanislao Zuleta, among others.
