Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. No Jacket. Johnson, Clifton (illustrator). Second Edition. Observations based on Thoreau's several journeys from his hometown of Concord, MA, to Cape Cod, detailing an Oct. 1849 trip all the way to the tip of Provincetown. Attracted by the region's isolation as well as by its "independent, self-reliant" residents, the book was not published until 3 years after his death in 1862. This is the 1908 Second Edition, with the prose brought to life by the photogravure images of Clifton Johnson, who, in his Introduction, describes how he traveled the same route as the author, in the same month, in order to make his images as true to Thoreau's vision as possible. In 318 pages, many uncut, with a tissue-guarded Frontispiece + 32 internal plates, all intact & flawless. 8vo. Medium-green cloth-covered boards decorated in bright gilt & red to front with a design by Margaret Armstrong (her initials in bottom right corner). Gilt lettering to front & spine, gilt to top edges of text block. Condition is VG+: completely clean & unmarked, binding strong & straight, but rear hinge is cracked. Pages modestly tanned but unmarked. Exterior shows slight rubbing & pushing to both ends of spine & corners. No DJ, as issued. A handsome copy! Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have!
