Softcover. Condition: Good+. Souvenir Program from the Democratic National Convention held in Houston, Texas in 1928. Jesse H. Jones helped write the foreword and was Director of Finance for the DNC. Jones also ran for the Presidential Nomination, but finished 5th in the voting in the first round, out of 13. Jones was a famous a…nd wealthy Texan and philanthropist whose name adorns concert halls, buildings, and colleges in Houston today. The DNC nominated Al Smith of New York who went on to get crushed by his opponent in the general election, Herbert Hoover. Smith was the first Democrat since Reconstruction to lose more than 1 southern state - he managed to lose Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Perhaps because he was Catholic, anti-Ku Klux Klan, and anti-Prohibition. The Democrats would not lose another presidential race until 1952. This souvenir program includes biographies of many of the heavy hitters in the party. Of possibly more interest, it contains quite a bit of material about the state of Texas in 1928 with information on all the major Texas cities including Galveston, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Fort Worth, Dallas, El Paso, Corpus Christi, and Beaumont. And enough Texas history (with a great map showing just how big Texas really is) to let the out of towners know that they're in Texas now. Laid in is a short booklet entitled "Speech Containing Platform of Gov. O. H. Simpson Delivered at Washington, Louisiana - Saturday, September 24th. 1927." Governor Simpson lost the 1928 Democratic primary to the legendary Huey P. Long, who of course went on to win the general and become governor. Ships same or next business day well protected in a box.
