Le 28 mai 1940, le roi Léopold III, commandant en chef des forces armées belges, cesse le combat après 18 jours de lutte inégale contre la plus grande armée alors jamais vue au monde. Sa capitulation sauve du massacre ses 600.000 hommes. Sa résistance a permis le rembarquement, à Dunkerque, des forces qui formeront le noyau des armées alliées victorieuses en 1944-45. Au lieu des lauriers mérités par ce haut fait de bravoure, le Roi est traité de fuyard par ceux qui ont fui, de traître par ceux qui étaient prêts à trahir. Nombreux sont ceux qui, aujourd?hui, cherchent encore la vérité. De récentes émissions de télévision, sur le thème équivoque de l?Ordre Nouveau, ont enterré les calomnies contre un homme qui, prisonnier d?un silence royal, n?a pas pu se défendre. Le 23 septembre 1983, Léopold III s?éteignit à Bruxelles. En se recueillant devant son chef bien-aimé, un de ses anciens soldats de quarante jure de rétablir son honneur. Il se fait que cet homme n?est pas n?importe qui. Docteur en droit, licencié en notariat, avocat au barreau de Bruxelles depuis 1938, le sous-lieutenant Jean Cleeremans, sur notre photo, aujourd?hui respecté maître de la Cour, entreprend la bataille des 18 jours, le 10 mai 1940, comme adjoint au chef d?un peloton de carabiniers. Cinq jours après, la mort fauche et il est chef de ce peloton. Quand le Roi invite ses 600.000 hommes à se rendre après avoir proclamé : « Vous avez fait tout votre devoir », Jean Cleeremans, comme le commandant en chef, prend le chemin des prisonniers. 45 ans plus tard, son c?ur est aussi fidèle que sa mémoire.
