Le nom de Leone Nani ne figure pas dans les manuels d'histoire il de la photographie. Il figure en revanche dans les archives de l'Institut Pontifical des Missions Etrangères (le Pime), qui l'envoya en Chine au début du XXe siècle. Pourtant, par la qualité des images qu'il réalisa, par le nombre et le choix de ses sujets, par sa stupéfiante aisance dans les situations les plus diverses, Nani a gagné sur le champ le droit d'être considéré comme un grand photographe. Leone Nani (Albino, 1880-1935) part très, jeune pour la Chine ; à seulement 23 ans, il est destiné au lointain vicariat apostolique du Shaanxi, à la mission de Hanzhong, dans une région de Chine intérieure comprise entre la Grande Muraille et le fleuve Han. Il reste en Chine de 1904 à 1914 et, pendant ces dix ans d'activité, il visite de nombreux villages, découvrant des réalités sociales et culturelles normalement inaccessibles aux autres Occidentaux. Avec son studio de photo mobile, travaillant surtout avec des plaques de verre qu'il développe et imprime seul, Nani fait le portrait de jeunes couples, de familles, de dignitaires, de paysans et d'artisans ; il immortalise des scènes de la vie quotidienne, des cérémonies religieuses, des architectures et des paysages, se révélant un excellent observateur des us et coutumes locaux, mais aussi un lion reporter. Ces photos extraordinaires, magnifiquement reproduites ici en noir et blanc, témoignent de l'une des périodes les plus complexes de l'histoire millénaire de l'Empire chinois : celle de la violente transition qui marque la chute de la dynastie Qing et la naissance de la République.Le père Nani conclut une époque : celle des grands photographes pionniers qui, à partir de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle - dans d'infinies difficultés, avec des moyens de fortune et dans des circonstances souvent dramatiques - ont saisi des aspects de la Chine qui, sans eux, seraient restes inconnus ou seulement connus à travers les descriptions des voyageurs."" ************************** ref 197.
