First edition. Octavo. Publisher's original pictorial brown cloth with titles in gilt and black to the upper board and spine. Illustrated with 18 black and white photographic plates, including frontispiece. pp. [8], 272. Contemporary ink ownership inscription dated 1897 to the half-title page (a little smudged). A very good copy, the binding secure with a slight lean to the spine and hinges a little tender in places, a minor hole to the head of the lower joint, and a little bumping to the extremities. The contents with some light scattered foxing (mostly to the preliminary pages) are otherwise in good order. A detailed account of the author's travels and observations of life in South Africa at the close of the nineteenth century, including discussion of the lives of the Zulu and other indigenous peoples, as well as the Boer and English settlers. An uncommon title.
