Né en 1580 à Dantzig (aujourd'hui Gdansk, Pologne) et mort en 1622 à Leyde (Pays-Bas), Philip Clüver (ou Cluwer, Cluvier, Cluverus) est considéré comme le père de la géographie historique. Après des études de droit, il voyage intensément à travers l'Europe, s?intéressant aux cultures et aux paysages, avant de se consacrer pleinement à la géographie. En 1615, il est nommé géographe officiel à l?université de Leyde, où il publie des ?uvres influentes, et où sera notamment imprimée de manière posthume la première édition (1624) de son Introduction à la géographie universelle. Cet ouvrage de référence allie histoire et géographie pour décrire les peuples, territoires, et coutumes de l?époque. Clüver y adopte une approche innovante en intégrant des aspects historiques pour contextualiser les lieux géographiques. L'?uvre de Clüver a eu une influence durable, surtout en Europe, et a marqué la géographie jusqu?au XVIIIe siècle. L'édition que nous présentons est complète du beau portrait de l'auteur tenant une mappemonde dans son cabinet de travail, de la planche divisée en quatre avec roses des vents et représentations schématiques du globe terrestre, d'une mappemonde (avec déchirures restaurées anciennement, sans manque), et de 32 cartes géographiques dépliantes (Europe, Afrique, Asie, Palestine, Italie, Sardaigne, Corse, etc.). Bon exemplaire malgré quelques rousseurs et traces d'usage. 1641.
