Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Good. Hardcover, 302 pages. Bound in full leather. A spectacular artists binding. Full maroon leather with inlay work on the cover and spine, hand-stamped gold decorations and lettering. Top edge gilt. Outer edge deckled. The whole remains in beautiful condition after nearly 80 years. The book was designed…by T. Spencer Hutson and printed at the Alexander Hamilton Press in March, 1930. All illustrations are reproduced using the Knudson Process. This is a special limited edition of 18 copies, of which this is number 1. Each of these 18 special copies includes an original of one of the illustrations by Alexander King. This copy has a few detached pages at the front. The front endpaper, 2 blank sheets, the limitation page, and the first illustration are all detached. Sadly, this was a effect of brittle paper, not rough use. The pages simply snapped off at the gutter. Since those pages are detached, the rest of that first signature is loose as well containing the title page, the second illustration and the table of contents. All these could be rehinged and reinserted with a minimal effect on the whole. There are 18 illustrations. This copy seems to be lacking the original drawing all 18 illustrations show tiny dots under magnification. The illustrations are done in orange and black. The book is housed in a custom made padded box. Brown bookcloth with an orange leather spine. The book sits in a padded compartment. It is an elaborate case, most likely designed and built by the same binder who did the book, as befitting the first of an extremely limited edition. The hinges of the box are worn and the boards are rubbed, from two generations of shelfwear.
