Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Fair. Substantial mid-century American surgical textbook edited by Frederick C. Christopher, professor of surgery at Northwestern University Medical School and chief surgeon at Evanston Hospital. This fifth edition contains 1,465 illustrations arranged in 742 figures and covers the major fields of general a…nd operative surgery as understood in the immediate postwar period. The fifth edition was originally issued in 1949 and contains approximately xxv, 1,550 pages. This copy is identified on the copyright page as the April 1953 reprinting. A contemporary review described the fifth edition as an extensively illustrated, large-format surgical reference intended for physicians and medical students. Condition: Publisher's brown cloth binding with gilt spine lettering and maroon title panels. Heavy wear to the spine ends, with substantial fraying, tears, and cloth loss at both the head and foot. Additional rubbing, abrasion, and handling wear to the spine cloth; gilt lettering remains legible. Corners and extremities show wear. Interior pages are age-toned with occasional scattered marks. Previous owner's signature in red ink on the front endpaper, appearing to read "W. R. Snider." No dust jacket. A complete-looking but externally worn working or reference copy; the binding should be handled with care. Please examine photographs closely. A useful historical reference documenting American surgical education and practice during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Its extensive anatomical and procedural illustrations give it appeal to collectors of medical history, surgery, vintage medical textbooks, and historical medical illustration. Carefully packed and shipped with tracking. Domestic shipping by USPS Media Mail unless otherwise requested. International shipping is available at cost. Because this is a large, heavy volume, additional postage may be required for expedited or international delivery. Returns accepted in accordance with AbeBooks' return policy. SCI 1d.
