Add to basketCondition: Very good plus. Beautifully bound Edwardian edition of the Christmas classic, featuring a Vellucent vignette binding by Cedric Chivers of Bath. After the success of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, Dickens continued to produced "little Christmas books" in order to meet demand that swelled for the holiday season, then as now the bus…iest time for booksellers. First published in 1845, CRICKET ON THE HEARTH is the third in the series, featuring a drama of domestic happiness that picks up on themes from the Ghost of Christmas Past scene in A CHRISTMAS CAROL. This copy was bound by Chivers of Bath in the trademark style he developed that was also a landmark in the history of book design: the Vellucent binding. In this technique, a painted design is protected by the addition of a layer of vellum so thin that it is translucent, giving it the appearance of a delicate glass window. A striking copy of the beloved Victorian tale. 7'' x 4.5''. Contemporary tan morocco by Cedric Chivers stamped with elegant gilt ornaments, central Vellucent title vignette to front board. Top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. Illustrated by Brock with 8 full-page color plates as well as black-and-white vignettes. 171, [1] pages. Slight fading to spine, faint spotting to boards, rubbing to vignette. Some instances of foxing to interior. Hinges firm.

Add to basketFirst edition thus, with illustrations by Edmund Sullivan. 8vo. Bound by Cedric Chivers in a "vellucent" binding. Full ivory vellum, with decoration in ink highlighted with blue and brown watercolour. Gilt borders. Chivers stamp to front blank. A handsome copy. Black and white drawings by Sullivan. Based partly on the author's e…xperiences at Rugby, Tom Brown's School Days was the first famous 'school story' and set a blueprint for the genre which became so popular throughout the twentieth century, influencing P.G. Wodehouse, Frank Richards, Enid Blyton and J.K. Rowling amongst many others. The book also saw the invention of one of literature's most popular anti-heroes in the school bully, Flashman, whose later life was successfully recreated by George MacDonald Fraser. Cedric Chivers' vellucent bindings are beautiful and delicate, they came about when Chivers invented a process to make vellum translucent. The cover design was painted on a separate sheet and then had a thin sheet of vellum laid over it. Bindings were offered in very small numbers due to the workmanship involved.

Add to basketA fine vellucent binding by Cedric Chivers of Bath. 8vo (binding dimensions 17x11cm; page dimensions 16.5x10cm). Double gilt rules to upper cover, enclosing a painted floral design on a green background, calligraphic titles, inlaid mother of pearl hearts, and small gilt dots. Double gilt rules to spine, two inlaid mother of pear…l hearts, painted design, and calligraphic titles. Double gilt rules to lower cover, with a painted thistle in the centre, and an inlaid mother of pearl heart above it. Gilt turn-ins, the rear turn-in signed "Cedric Chivers Bath". Top edge gilt. A near fine example, the binding very well preserved indeed. The contents rather foxed. Bookplate of one Cecil Francis Milsom to front pastedown, gift inscription to front free endpaper. Housed in custom made slipcase. A well-preserved Cedric Chivers vellucent binding of a most attractive design. Chivers's technique reintroduced the style of painted vellum bindings produced by Edwards of Halifax in the 18th century, but rather than have his artists paint directly onto the vellum, they would paint on paper under a transparent layer of vellum. This preserved the design, and allowed "mother of pearl and other exotic materials [to be] added as highlights under the vellum", as in the present example (Tidcombe). The gold tooling, so deftly employed here, would then be added to the surface of the vellum.

Add to basketChivers bindings. Condition: Fine. STUNNING CHIVERS VELLUCENT BINDINGS. One of 100 large-paper copies, illustrated by Louis Fairfax Muckley. The three thick quarto volumes are elegantly printed on handmade paper and illustrated throughout with images and designs by the British artist and illustrator Louis Fairfax Muckley. The il…lustrations are magnificent and feature the plates in two states, red and black. The bindings by Chivers, however, are the star of the show and perfectly complement the text. For the front boards, Muckley has created an intricate design featuring a knight and lady on galloping horses surrounded by decorative borders and gilt titling. Each spine depicts a lady emerging from a colorful background, while each rear board has a stylized dragon seemingly jumping out from the binding. While the outlines of the designs are the same on each volume, they are each painted with different colors, creating a unique look and mood for each. On Cedric Chivers's "vellucent" bindings: Chivers created a masterful binding technique in the late 19th century he called "vellucent" a portmanteau combining "vellum" and "translucent". The process was arduous, but the results were stunning, with artwork seeming to glow under a layer of thin protective vellum. His process began with a decorative designin the case of these volumes, artwork by Louis Fairfax Murray created on paper or thin parchment. The artwork was then placed underneath a sheet of vellum that was extremely thin and specially treated to be translucent, allowing the colors to almost shine like a stained glass window. The final step was particularly tricky since vellum is not particularly flexible, it required expert craftsmanship to lay it smoothly over the book's boards and spine without wrinkles or bubbles. The result is a binding that doubles as a work of fine art. The bindings are stamped "Bound by Cedric Chivers" in gilt on the rear dentelles and decoratively written on the rear endpaper of volume 1 (likely by Chivers) is the note: "THIS BOOK IS BOUND BY / CEDRIC CHIVERS BATH / 2 COPIES ONLY WITH THIS DESIGN / THIS IS NO 1". Anecdotally, however, we are aware of three copies that have been bound with this design (although without the written limitation). Provenance: There is a note in pencil in the first volume that these are from the Robert Hoe collection, but we have not been able to confirm this. London: J.M. Dent, 1897. Thick octavos (258 x 197 mm), vellucent bindings by Chivers. Text nearly pristine. A touch of bowing to bindings. AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE OF CHIVERS BINDINGS IN UNUSUALLY FINE CONDITION.

Two volumes bound in one, small octavo (6 15/16 x 4 1/16 inches; 177 x 103 mm.). xxii, 294, [1, imprint], [1, blank];, xii, 254, [1, imprint], [1, blank] pp. Two engraved frontispieces and one hundred and sixty-two black & white illustrations, including decorative head and tailpieces, all by Char…les E. Brock. Bound ca. 1906 in a fine pastel "vellucent" binding by Cedric Chivers (stamp-signed in gilt on rear lower turn-in), with a delicately hand-painted 'Art Nouveau' floral design. This binding is No. LXXXV on page 34 of the Cedric Chivers catalog "Books in Beautiful Bindings." The front cover with three red flowers and a green vine design enclosing the title "The Essays And The Last Essays of Elia. Charles Lamb". Lower cover with a similar design but with just one red flower. Smooth spine similarly decorated and lettered in watercolor and gilt, gilt ruled turn-ins, mottled pale-green liners and end-papers, all edges gilt. Neat ink inscription dated "Xmas 1906" on front blank. A very fine example housed in the original fleece-lined, green cloth slipcase (missing the movable spine panel). Patented in 1898, Chivers's "vellucent" bindings departed from traditional methods of creating hand-painted vellum bindings. The usual approach was to merely bind a book in vellum and then paint on a design, but this is prone to rubbing and flaking and such examples are often now found chipped and deteriorated. In the 18th century Chivers's great predecessor, Edwards of Halifax, painted in reverse on the underside of translucent vellum, thereby providing a layer of protection for the design. His technique was not widely copied and almost vanished with his death, and it was not until the 1890s that Chivers developed his own similar method for protecting the design underneath the vellum itself - the backing sheet of the vellum was painted, which was then covered in vellum which had been shaved to transparency. The vellum was then tooled in gilt, on occasion incorporating additional mother-of-pearl and onlays. The books which Chivers thus bound have always been a favorite of collectors, and usually still present well, the vellum having served its purpose of protecting the design for many decades, as Chivers intended. Chivers was also known to have employed a great many craftswomen at his bindery in Portway: "forty women for folding, sewing, mending, and collating work, and in addition, five more women worked in a separate department, to design, illuminate, and colour vellum for book decoration, and to work on embossed leather. These five were Dorothy Carleton Smyth, Alice Shepherd, Miss J.D. Dunn, Muriel Taylor, and Agatha Gales" (Tidcombe). This book brings together Charles Lamb's Essays of Elia (first published in 1823) with the subsequent volume Last Essays of Elia (issues in 1833). The accessible and conversational essays were published under the pseudonym Elia, inspired by an Italian man that Lamb had known at the South Sea House, and had appeared serially in The London Magazine between 1820 and 1825. Despite his struggles with mental illness, Charles Lamb (1775-1834) would be celebrated for his literary contributions, producing a range of material from essays to poems. Lamb belonged to an active literary circle which included Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron. Fine.
