C. hasta la desmembración del Imperio Romano, por las comunidades que habitaron los territorios que se extienden en torno al Mediterráneo; englobando,… no sólo al continente europeo, sino también la orilla meridional del significativamente designado por los romanos Mare Nostrum, el litoral próximo oriental, el Asia Menor y más allá; yendo así desde la península ibérica hasta las estepas rusas y desde las tierras escandinavas hasta el norte del continente africano. Una visión holística permite definir un proceso cuyo inicio está protagonizado por comunidades sin estado o con estados embrionarios -como los griegos-, que entraron en contacto con los estados palaciegos orientales, de los que adoptaron los sistemas nemotécnicos de escritura y contabilidad simplificados, dando paso a un individualismo que marcó el desarrollo de las nacientes ciudades-estado griegas. La potencia de este individualismo caracterizaría de forma decisiva el desarrollo de una nueva forma de entender la vida, más racional, que ha perfilado por milenios el carácter básico de la cultura europea. A partir de ahí, mezclándose con los sustratos locales, debido sobre todo al comercio, movido en gran medida por las necesidades de las potencias orientales, se fue produciendo una convergencia, lenta pero efectiva, que culminará con la formación del multiforme y plural, aunque sólido y fecundo, Estado Imperial Romano. Éste, sin abandonar los principios de racionalidad, cada vez se irá aproximando más a las formaciones palaciegas euroasiáticas -Persia, India, China- con las que entró en contacto e intercambió influencias. Nuevas formas de comunicarse y relacionarse, de vivir en el ámbito rural y en comunidades urbanas, de entender las relaciones con los poderes humanos y divinos fueron configurando, en medio de la expansión directa -por medio de la conquista- o indirecta -;contactos e interacciones de otro tipo- un sistema de organización y una forma de ser que distinguió mucho tiempo a Europa del resto del continente euroasiático.
