Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Stated First American Edition. This was Magnhild Haalke's first novel. You can see the covers in the photographs provided. They are in very nice condition, very clean, with little to no wear. The label on the spine (second photo) is tanned and has a small stain. This book is solidly bound. There are no cracks or spaces. The pages are nicely tight. They are also very clean. Scrolling through, I saw only a few instances of a tiny spot of soiling and only on the margin. There are no markings in this book. No attachments. No one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The pages are also in very nice condition. I saw only a few thin creases and one quarter crease. There was also a nick to the middle page edge which has caused a very slight dent at the outer page edge of eight or nine pages. 'Haalke made her literary debut in 1935 with the novel Allis sønn. Her deep psychological insight and great environmental descriptions ensured her a lasting place in Norwegian literature. Eventually she wrote nearly 30 books. Haalke made use of strong, colorful language and lush figures of speech. Her novels often focused on adult insensitive treatment of defenseless youth. The role of the mother in childhood development was a frequent subject. In several books she wrote of values relating to childhood environment and family traditions. Haalke was awarded Gyldendal's Endowment in 1949 and the Dobloug Prize in 1980. She was the first recipient of Mads Wiel Nygaards Endowment, which she was awarded in 1953, which she shared with novelist, Lizzie Juvkam.'.

Hard Back. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. First American Edition Stated. 248 Pages. Top page edges are red. Green boards with blue spine lettering and blue decoration on the front board. A book from the collection of Elizabeth James for which there is an Ex Libris on the front endpaper. Interior text pages are bright, tight, and white. The inner nature of Sigrid Undset has always been strongly drawn to certain haunting personalities of the past. Like herself, the people of this book have roots in history; like herself, they are men and women of serene and abiding faith. Madame Undset is known as one of the foremost interpreters of the Catholic spirit of our times, as well as one of the greatest of modem belle-lettrists. Her own personality is so vividly expressed in every one of these nine papers that one might almost call the whole volume a self-portrait. Contents: Blasphemy, D. H. Lawrence, Marie Begendahl, Margery Kempe of Lynn, Cavalier, The Strongest Power, Leo Weismantel, Summer in Gotland, and Glastonbury.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: NO DUST JACKET. 1st US Edition. VG/NO DUST JACKET. 1st US Edition. Norwegian novel, translated into English. Book has "Garlicks Subscription Library" stamped across the top edge-cut, and again at the foot of the first page of text. Stamped number on the front pastedown. Rear pastedown has a postage sized stamp affixed, to the effect that the first lender paid the scandalous amount of "3d - Book to be returned on or before 20 May 1936". Having been extorted of this usurious sum, this first lender obviously sought redress for this heinous charge by absconding with the book, as there are no further stamps affixed. No other libr ary markings, no pockets etc. Green boards show some erosion. Wear-through and bumping on three corners. Small split on the spine heel, approx ¼cm. Binding is intact, no loose pages.
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. In blue cloth. Bookplate. A nice copy.
