Edition originale rare de ce volume, qui comporte deux éloges, quatre rapports et quatre mémoires. Ce mémoire de Vallon, récompensé par le prix Civrieux de l'Académie de médecine, occupe 104 pages. Charles Vallon (1853-1924), originaire de Limoges, ancien élève de Lasègue et de Benjamin Ball (dont il fut le chef de clinique de 1882 à 1884), était médecin en chef de la division des hommes à l'asile d'aliénés de Villejuif. Il deviendra médecin en chef de l'asile Sainte-Anne en 1900. Il est l'auteur de travaux importants, souvent récompensés par des prix (prix Esquirol de la Société médico-psychologique en 1879, prix Civrieux en 1891 et 1893 et prix Lefèvre de l'Académie de médecine en 1893). Ce mémoire est basé sur une revue de la littérature et surtout sur la grande expérience de l'auteur. Comme l'indiqua A. Marie, "peu de services réunissent un nombre aussi considérable de paralytiques à toutes les phases de l'évolution". Sur la base de données cliniques, évolutives et anatomo-cliniques, Vallon plaide la non-existence des pseudo-paralysies générales, tant saturnines qu'alcooliques, ces affections étant le plus souvent, selon lui, des états intermédiaires entre une intoxication cérébrale (due à l'alcool ou au plomb) et la paralysie générale. Offici…er de la Légion d'Honneur Après avoir fait à l'asile Sainte-Anne (Paris) ses trois années d'internat chez Henri Dagonet, Vallon y est nommé Chef de Clinique de pathologie mentale, dans le service de Benjamin Ball. De 1885 à 1900, il est médecin-chef à l'asile de Villejuif, récemment ouvert, et mute à l'Asile Clinique en la même qualité. A Sainte-Anne, il remplace Paul Dubuisson (passé à la Division des femmes, poste laissé vacant par la mort de Gustave Bouchereau) dans ce service des hommes où il avait débuté sa carrière et où il la finira en 1921. Pendant la Grande Guerre, Vallon est attaché comme expert au Val-de-Grâce et au Conseil de guerre du Gouvernement militaire de Paris. Fondateur de la Société de Psychiatrie, Vallon fut membre de plusieurs sociétés savantes, notamment de la Société de Médecine légale et de la Société médico-psychologique dont il est élu président en 1906. Parmi ses très nombreuses publications, dont plusieurs ont été couronnées par l'Académie de Médecine, citons - « Ataxie locomotrice et folie simulées », Archives de Neurologie, 1896, avec le docteur Paul Garnier - Les aliénés en Russie, 1899, avec le docteur A. Marie, son successeur à Villejuif - La pathologie mentale au point de vue administratif et judiciaire, sa contribution au Traité de pathologie mentale publié par Gilbert Ballet. Dans le domaine de l'histoire de la psychiatrie, il publie avec Georges Genil-Perrin deux articles, «La psychiatrie médico-légale dans l'oeuvre de Zacchias» (1912), et «La Psychiatrie dans l'Histoire. Un crime altruiste : l'attentat d'Hillairaud contre Bazaine» (1914) dans La Chronique médicale. En 1904, « une épreuve terrible avait assombri sa vie. Au cours d'une visite de ses malades, à Ste-Anne, un persécuté le frappait d'un coup de couteau qui atteignait la moelle, à la nuque. Pendant de long jours, peut-on lire dans l'article nécrologique signé F.-L. Arnaud et paru en 1925 dans les Annales médico-psychologiques, nous restions étreints par l'angoisse des conséquences redoutées de cette blessure. Enfin, la guérison fut obtenue, mais une guérison relative qui laissait le Dr Vallon sous le coup de crises douloureuses assez fréquentes. Il supporta l'épreuve avec un véritable stoïcisme qui ne s'est jamais démenti. Il put connaître alors, d'une manière éclatante et particulièrement touchante, l'estime qui l'entourait, lorsqu'il nous fut donné de fêter son rétablissement dans une réunion où se pressait la foule de ses amis, de ses élèves, de ses compatriotes Limousins et des nombreux confrères qui avaient tenu à lui apporter un témoignage de sympathie. Pour tous ceux qui purent y participer, cette réunion demeure inoubliable. ».
