Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 470 pages. Published in 2009. The author's magisterial account on subject. One of the best books ever written in our time on evolution in particular and science in general. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with… all other subsequent editions. Published in a regular first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The book remains available in innumerable subsequent printings. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Richard Dawkins' "The Greatest Show On Earth: The Evidence For Evolution". An accessible and engaging account on a subject that he victoriously celebrates - rather than argues - as indisputable, irrefutable fact. He makes a compelling case for Charles Darwin as THE most consequential and influential - therefore the greatest - thinker of our time, since at least the late-19th century up to the present. Greater, that is, than the greatest: Einstein, Freud, and Marx, among a few others. Yet Dawkins realized that a disturbingly large percentage of the American and British public - the majority, in fact - did not share his knowledge, much less conviction, about evolution. Admittedly, natural selection - "survival of the fittest" - is an inescapably harsh and cruel reality. But for Dawkins: Fact = The Truth. In the end, nothing but the truth really matters to him as the greatest Darwinian of our time. Resistance and resentment about evolution are deep because it seems to contradict the Bible and refute the existence of God. Well, of course, it does. Notwithstanding intellectual attempts to find their common ground, the respective worldviews are fundamentally non-negotiable and irreconcilable. "There is grandeur in his view of life" (Jonah Lehrer). An absolute "must-have" title for Richard Dawkins collectors. This title is a great book. This is one of relatively few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (American) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Almost ALL other copies available online, including those that say "First Edition", are not because they are in multiple subsequent printings (even if their dealers don't say so). Or they have serious flaws. As such, they do not have collectible value. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with magnificent color plates. One of the greatest scientist/thinkers of our time. A fine copy. ISBN 1416594787. no.

[3], 26 - 51, [3] pp. Adverts last 2 pages. 7-3/8" x 5-1/4" "The publication of the series of essays on Evolution, delivered under the auspices of the Brooklyn Ethical Association, is undertaken in response to a general and increasing demand for a correct statement, in popular form, of the leading ideas, inferences… and tendencies involved in the acceptance of the Evolution Philosophy, together with a clear statement of the main lines of evidence or proof by which the conception of Evolution is sustained. . The different phases of the subject are treated in this series in a certain natural order of succession, which the student and reader will do well to follow in the perusal of the lectures."
