Edited with an introduction and notes by Kate Flint. Penguin, 2003, xli, 321pp., . Penguin classics. - "The 'terrible mistake' was the contemporary utilitarian philoso…phy, expounded in Hard Times (1854) as the Philosophy of Fact by the hard-headed disciplinarian Thomas Gradgrind. But the novel, Dickens's shortest, is more than a polemical tract for the times; the tragic story of Louisa Gradgrind and her father is one of Dickens's triumphs. When Louisa, trapped in a loveless marriage, falls prey to an idle seducer, the crisis forces her father to reconsider his cherished system". 9780141439679 ISBN 014143967X.

DICKENS, CHARLES. A tale of two cities. With illustrations by Phiz and an afterword by Sam Gilpin. New York: Barn…es & Noble Books / CRW Publishing, 2003, 520pp., . Complete & unabridged. - A Tale of Two Cities is one of Charles Dickens's most exciting novels. Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, it tells the story of a family threatened by the terrible events of the past. Doctor Manette was wrongly imprisoned in the Bastille for eighteen years without trial by the aristocratic authorities. Finally released, he is reunited with his daughter, Lucie, who despite her French ancestry has been brought up in London. Lucie falls in love with Charles Darnay, another expatriate, who has abandoned wealth and a title in France because of his political convictions. When revolution breaks out in Paris, Darnay returns to the city to help an old family servant, but there he is arrested because of the crimes committed by his relations. His wife, Lucie, their young daughter, and her aged father follow him across the Channel, thus putting all their lives in danger. 9780760748718 ISBN 0760748713.

hardcover. Condition: Acceptable. Missing. Chapman & Hall, ld., London, Published date: 1905. Hardcover; xii, 100 pp; 19 cm. First edition. Includes 3 unnumbered black and white illustrations, plates reproducing scenes from Charles Dickens The Mystery of Edwin Drood, after original illustrations by S. L. Fildes. In acceptable co…ndition / NO dust jacket. Original red cloth boards with gilt lettering on front cover and spine; moderate overall rubbing and surface abrasion to cloth, with scattered areas of color loss and a mottled, worn appearance, particularly to the front cover; no staining or damp damage; fraying at spine ends and corners; small loss at head of spine; boards remain sound. Binding intact. Interior pages lightly toned with age; occasional light foxing. Critical literary study by Andrew Lang (1844-1912) examining the unfinished final novel of Charles Dickens, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, and proposing a solution to the unresolved plot following Dickens death in 1870. Lang analyzes narrative structure, character evidence, and contemporary illustrations, arguing for a coherent intended resolution consistent with Dickens working methods. The book reflects late Victorian critical engagement with Dickens and early detective-fiction analysis, and is one of the best-known speculative interpretations of Dickens final work. Contents include: Introduction; The Puzzle of Dickens's Last Plot; Conclusion.

Odhams Press was dissolved in 1968. Odhams chose to keep the original illustrations created by Phiz (Hablot Knight Browne), which was, of course, a… good decision "The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby", first issued in serial parts, was Dickens' third novel, and the one that firmly established him in the pantheon of English novelists. It is part comedic, partly a romance, and partly serious exposition (especially the latter parts of the story. Wackford Squeers, the cruel schoolmaster, is one of Dickens' great villains, based on a person that Dickens had once met. It is a complex story, in ways that only the serially issued novel might be.
