Although the date on the title page is 1969, this looks to be a more recent printing. Wilmer McLean was one of the more unfortunate homeowners in American history. His first house was near Manassas, Virginia, was being used by Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard during the First Battle of Bull Run and was fired upon by Federal forces. A cannonball fell into the kitchen fireplace, ruining dinner. Too old to fight, he decided to move his family to safety to Appomattox Court House. On April 8 1865, a messenger knocked on his door requesting that his home be used for Lee's surrender to Grant. So McLean's two homes were involved in one of the first and last operations of the Civil War in Virginia.
