Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. New York: Ronald L. Smith, 1955. First edition. November, 1955 / whole number 46/ issue number 12 under the name Inside and Science Fiction Advertiser (which is the last name for the famed sci-fi / fantasy fanzine, which was also published under the earlier names "Fantasy Advertise…r" and "Science Fiction Advertiser", though the primary focus was always Science Fiction). Ron Smith became the Editor/Publisher with the November, 1954 issue, which was also the first under this name. Octavo, stapled illustrated wraps, 42 pp. Very Good plus to about near fine; two chips at bottom front cover, peripheral toning (see scans). s This November / 1955 issue was published as Ron Smith was continuing to improve the fanzine, which had been erratic in quality in prior years; 1956, yet to come, would be perhaps the best year. Though credited artwork is still sparse, there's plenty inside to enjoy; a rare short story - "Infiltration" by Carl Larsen - and articles, editorials, essays and reviews by editor Smith, William L. Freeman, Randall Garrett, Robert Silverberg, Lin Carter, Dave Mason, James Blish, George W. Price, Carl Larsen, Joe Schaumburger, R.S. Montague, S. Ostlund, Bob Tucker - all these pieces being, and having always been to this point, the meat of the fanzine under its several names. See scan of contents page. A rarity, for the collector. l-pr1. Pat Patterson (cover); interior art undredited (illustrator).

Stapled Wraps. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. New York: Ronald L. Smith, 1956. The May, 1956 issue (Inside number 15, whole number 49), the tenth anniversary edition, of Inside and Science Fiction Advertiser. Previous names: Fantasy Advertiser, then Science Fiction Advertiser. Octavo, stapled wraps, 38 pp. + covers. About…Near Fine, showing only perimeter sunning (see scan). In addition to Dollens' cover art, there are interior illustrations by Neil Austin, Lin Carter, "Cindy", Pat Patterson, and Dan Adkins. Smith's memorable science fiction fanzine, originated by Norman "Gus" Willmorth under the earlier names and edited by him through November 1949, was long a compendium of SF book reviews and ads, and still is here; but, by this time, there were also non-fiction contributions by some of the better-known names in Sci-fi, and the page count was a bit higher. Herein, in addition to the standard fare, are "SFA: The First Ten Years", Robert Silverberg's detailed history of this fanzine; "H.P. Lovecraft: The Books", the second part (of 3) of Lin Carter's study of books mentioned by H.P. Lovecraft in his works; "Worst Foot Forward" by Robert Bloch,a criticism of the adverse effect (a "crash" in sci-fi, retrospectively non-existent, really) he then felt that bandwagon-ism had recently had on Science Fiction; and a collector-valuable historical chart of the fanzine, by issue and editor. Lpr1. Morris Scott Dollens, Neil Austin, Lin Carter, Cindy, Pat Patterson, and Dan Adkins (illustrator).

Stapled Wraps. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. New York: Ronald L. Smith, 1956. First edition. March, 1956, issue number 14 under the name "Inside and Science Fiction Advertiser" (which is the last name for the famed sci-fi / fantasy fanzine, which was also published under the earlier names "Fantasy Advertiser" and "Science… Fiction Advertiser", though the primary focus was always Science Fiction.) Ron Smith became the Editor/Publisher with the November, 1954 issue, which was also the first under this name. Octavo, stapled illustrated wraps, 42 pp. Near Fine. Some toning to cover margins, and one small nick at back cover (see scans); otherwise bright, tight and flawless. This March of 1956 issue is certainly one of the best produced in the entire sequence, and features a rarely-published reprint (with Permission from Arkham House) H.P. Lovecraft's July, 1919 philosophical reflection in The National Amateur, "Idealism and Materialism" (A Reflection), in which he assesses those concepts as opposites as light and dark in the universe, and as creations of mankind which will perish when we humans do. Plenty more inside, however. There is fanzine art of the highest order (ably managed by Art Editor Cindy Smith): Pat Patterson's wrap-around cover alien, and outstanding interior art by Alan Hunter, Lin Carter, Frank Jonbrian, Dan Adkins, Jack Wilson, and Dave Jenrette. Besides Lovecraft's piece, there are articles by John Brunner (Rusty Chains), Robert Bloch (Definitions), Randall Garrett (The Tale of Two Pretties) Lin Carter (H.P. Lovecraft: The Books - part one of a series in which Carter lays out in great detail the actual books mentioned by Lovecraft in his stories) and of course the meat of the fanzine, the book reviews, here handled by Carter, Garrett, Robert Silverberg, Charles Freudenthal, Dave Mason, Bill Edgerton, and Margaret Walcutt. And, of course - the creative ads. Amazing stuff, all around, from the history of Sci-Fi.'wow', when one reflects on it. Collector piece. See scans. l-pr1.
