Internally tight and clean w/moderate edgewear (mainly flaking to bottom edge), light surface wear, tanning. Handle with care if this isn't going to go straight into the collection, because the glue is dry and the paper is brittle, and before you know it your lovely little vintage paperback will be known as "that stack of garbage over there in the corner." The Peacock Feather Murders is a classic Golden Age locked-room mystery by John Dickson Carr, writing under his Carter Dickson pseudonym. Published in Britain as The Ten Teacups, it features Carr's celebrated detective Sir Henry Merrivale and Scotland Yard's Chief Inspector Humphrey Masters. An anonymous message predicts that ten teacups will be found at the scene of a murder. When the seemingly impossible crime occurs, Merrivale and Masters must unravel an ingenious puzzle involving a guarded house, a victim found near a revolver, and evidence that appears to defy conventional explanation. The novel is especially admired by collectors and readers of impossible-crime fiction and was ranked tenth in a poll of notable locked-room mysteries. Original black cloth-covered boards decorated and lettered in red. The front board features a striking geometric peacock-feather design, with coordinating feather ornament and lettering on the spine. An appealing example of 1930s Morrow Mystery book design. Condition is Good. No dust jacket. Binding remains intact, with visible internal gutter wear and some separation between gatherings; pages shown remain attached. Boards and spine display considerable rubbing, pale scuffing, spotting and general shelf wear. Red spine lettering and publisher's device are rubbed but substantially readable. Spine ends and corners show wear. Pages are age-toned with occasional spotting and handling marks. Two conspicuous old brown-and-black stains or residue marks appear on the rear endpaper and pastedown. Additional light discoloration is present along some page and endpaper margins. No ownership inscription, bookplate or textual annotation is visible in the areas examined. Despite its flaws, this is a scarce early printing of one of Carter Dickson's better-known Sir Henry Merrivale mysteries. The unusual original decorated binding remains attractive, making this a worthwhile copy for collectors of John Dickson Carr, Golden Age detective fiction and locked-room mysteries. This is an ex-lending library copy, with 13 dates written (in pencil) on the front free endpaper, the previous owner's name in blue pencil, and the remains of the dustjacket flaps glued to the paste-downs. The spine leans significantly, and there are some (coffee?) stains on a few of the early pages. Still and all, it is a copy of the 1944 first edition. …
