Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First edition. Inscribed in the year of publication on the front free endpaper: "For George, with affection + admiration, Paul, April 1972." Brooks was the editor-in-chief of Houghton Mifflin as well as Rachel Carson's editor, and in fact he suggested the title S…ilent Spring. This book is his biography of her and their work together. Brooks was also an accomplished naturalist writer himself and was the winner of the John Burroughs Medal for nature writing for Roadless Area. Very good with some rubbing to corners, the upper rear corner bumped more significantly. In a very good jacket with prominent sunning to spine and top edges, as is common for this title; a thin red streak at top of front panel, also, and one tear about an inch long to both the front and rear top edges. Illus. With Photos (illustrator). Signed.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. 1. An association copy: laid is a "compliments of Houghton Mifflin Company" card signed by its editor-in-chief Paul Brooks, and with the ownership signature of Houghton Mifflin editor Haven H. Spencer at the top of the front free endpaper. Spencer was a senior sc…ience editor for Houghton Mifflin and developed and managed the house's first college science department. Also laid in is a small promotional brochure/order form for the book featuring blurbs by William O Douglas, Robert Cushman Murphy, and John Kieran. Published just eight years after Carson's book, this book is part biography and account of the making of Silent Spring, part follow-up to that book with the latest update on "how the pesticide question stands today." Frank Graham, Jr., (see his NYT obit) was a prolific environmental writer and a field editor for Audubon magazine. Brooks was Rachel Carson's publisher and editor, and in fact he suggested the title Silent Spring. He was also an accomplished naturalist writer and winner of the John Burroughs Medal for nature writing for Roadless Area. Green cloth with silver gilt lettering. Very good with offsetting from now missing laid-in materials on the front free endpaper, title page (lightly), and dedication page; also one bump to rear top board edge near spine. In a very good jacket with edge wear and rubbing to corner and spine ends; one quarter-inch tear at top edge of front panel. A nice publishing association with rare ephemera. Signed.

Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First edition. An association copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Larry, with best regards, from Paul." The recipient was Laurence Hughes, longtime William Morrow president and CEO. Brooks was editor-in-chief of Houghton Mifflin, and in that capacity… was a great champion of environmental writing. As Rachel Carson's editor, he in fact suggested the title Silent Spring, and this book is his biography of her and their work together. Brooks was also an accomplished naturalist writer himself and was the winner of the John Burroughs Medal for nature writing for Roadless Area.Near fine with a touch of rubbing to corners and a gentle bump to top front corner. In a very good jacket with some wear to corners, slight fraying to spine ends, and one small tear to rear upper flap fold edge. A nice association between influential men in publishing. Illus.
