Hardcover. Condition: VG-. 1st ed. f/piece portrait by Anman & Swan, with facs.sig.+tissue guard+vi+483, 8 figs in final essay but have not spotted any others; ex-New Collge Oxford library with their heraldic plate fr. pastedown, another cancelled (private) heraldic plate fr. endpaper, sm.oval college stamp top fr.blank flyleaf, no further internal lib.markings, main problem with this is that bottom and outer edges are uncut resulting in inevitable nicking to outer margins of extended leaves, this likely to be common to all copies, also occ.clumsy openings, inner sides of endpapers browning. Blue cloth covers bright, generally clean and minimally worn, impressed round lib.stamp lower fr. Includes a bibliographical appendix pp.467-483. Essays range across Carpenter's wide interests from oceanography to theism, and physiology to psychology. Very useful for his stance on evolution and design. A very acceptable copy despite lib.provenance.
