(register), 1 leaf for device, and 2 original blank leaves at the end; there is a full-page woodcut illustration at p. 238 depicting the "Instrumenti appropriati a dar il foco a gli uccelli da rapina".First edition (the edition of 1547 mentioned by Harting and Souhart does not seem to exist, probably confused with Federico Giorgi's work) of the best-known and most authoritative of 16th century Italian books on falconry, the breeding and training of falcons, their ailments, etc. "Carcano states in his Preface that this treatise is the result of forty years' experience as a falconer, and the perusal of all the Italian and French books he could find relating to Falconry [.] The author's reputation as a falconer caused this book to become very popular, and it not only passed through several editions [.], but was extensively copied by subsequent writers, as, for example, Raimondi and Turberville" (Harting, p. 142f.). "An interesting treatise on falcons and sporting dogs, with remedies for their diseases" (Schwerdt). The full-page woodcuts show a set of veterinary instruments for use by the falconer. [10], LXXIII (78) pp. An anthology created in honor of a wedding, the work contains 28 poems, many of which are accompanied by a finely rendered copper engraved illustration, and a few also decorated with lovely tailpiece vignettes. The event being celebrated is the marriage between Anton-Giulio Brignole Sale (patrician of Genoa) and Anna Maria Pieri (patrician of Siena). Title page heavily soiled. Otherwise, quite clean, with linen rich paper stock. Later binding has decorative paper on spine and corners but is otherwise an unadorned thick cardboard and unprepossessing. Hardcover. This is a very rare sixteenth-century treatise on falconry in three libros (chapters) (pages 1 to 240), followed by one libro concerning the use of dogs for the hunt (pages 241 to 249). There are engravings on the first and last pages. The text also includes a drawing of veterinary instruments used in falconry. Headers and woodcut initials throughout the text. Very old, illegible signatures are on the title page. The elegant velum binding is in fine condition. Some watermarks throughout, otherwise in excellent condition with minimal signs of aging.

Non è stata legata una ulteriore carta… ch'era bianca anch'essa. Con una marca editoriale xilografica sul frontespizio (due galli, di cui uno becca in terra chicchi di granturco, al centro la pianta con le pannocchie), un'altra in fine (un'ancora aldina) e una illustrazione xilografica n.t. Un camminamento di tarlo riparato con carta velina ad una carta. Ceresoli, p. 133: "unica edizione vicentina", e p. 131: "L'opera del Carcano si può considerare come il più bello tra i libri classici della falconeria italiana, d'indole pratica, e, se si vuole, in rapporto all'epoca della pubblicazione, anche tecnica. Francesco Carcano, nobile vicentino, esercitò per oltre quarant'anni la falconeria [.]". La prima edizione è del 1568 (quella del 1547, citata da alcuni bibliografi non esiste). Ex-libris sulla controguardia anteriore. Timbretto di biblioteca e timbretto di vendita come duplicato, datata 1890. Bell'esemplare.

First edition - the edition of 1547 mentioned by Har…ting and Souhart does not seem to exist, propably confused with Federico Giorgi's work - of the best-known and most authoritative of 16th century Italian books on falconry, the breeding and training of falcons, their ailments, etc. "Carcano states in his Preface that this treatise is the result of forty years' experience as a falconer, and the perusal of all the Italian and French books he could find relating to Falconry [.] The author's reputation as a falconer caused this book to become very popular, and it not only passed through several editions [.], but was extensively copied by subsequent writers, as, for example, Raimondi and Turberville" (Harting, p. 142f.). "An interesting treatise on falcons and sporting dogs, with remedies for their diseases" (Schwerdt).
