Published in "Reports of Explorations and Surveys to Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean." Explorations and Surveys for a Rail R…oad Route from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. War Department. Route near the 38th. & 39th Parallels. Map No. 4. Pacific RR survey map of Colorado. Gunnison's final and most detailed map of the important series that Wheat illustrated in full. The map furnishes much detail along the route through western Colorado and Utah, and locates Fort Uintah, Brown's Hole, the Old Spanish Trail, and Bridger's Pass. An interesting and significant map of the region that would eventually be followed by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. While undertaking the western portion of this exploration in 1853, Gunnison was killed by Indians, and Beckwith completed the map.
