Mackenzie 1803-1848, joined the American navy aged 11 as a midshipman, serving on various ships, in 1825 was promoted to Lieutenant, soon afterwards being granted extended leave. He then travelled extensively in Europe, reading widely, becoming friends with Washington Irving and Henry Longfellow, the former securing John Murray as his English publisher.
