Bound in publisher's original rust-colored cloth with spines ruled in black, stamped with decorative gilt stars, and titled in bright gilt; UNC Press crests stamped in black on lower spines. Illustrated with frontispiece portraits, facsimile letters, and historic contemporary plates. Both volumes show tight, square bindings with clean cloth, bright gilt, sharp corners, and firm spine ends. Interiors are clean, bright, and unmarked, completely free of owner names, bookplates, or marginal notations. The original heavy paper-covered slipcase with printed pictorial labels on front and rear panels is structurally sound but shows evident wear, including edge rubbing, corner splitting/chipping, surface scuffing, and old transparent tape mends at the corners.
