So entstand die "Théorie élémentaire de la botanique" (1813, deutsche Übersetzung 1814-1815), die de Candolle in die Geschichte der Pflanzensystematiker eingehen liess. . De Candolle war zu seiner Zeit der herausragende Kenner der Morphologie und Physiologie der Pflanzen. Ausserdem befasste er sich mit Pflanzenchemie, Agronomie und Pharmakologie. Eines seiner grössten Verdienste ist es, die Grundlagen der Pflanzengeografie gelegt zu haben, insbesondere durch seinen ĞEssai élémentaire de géographie botaniqueğ (1820).
