Hardback. Condition: Good. How the billionaire owners of Hobby Lobby are spending hundreds of millions of dollars to make America a "Bible nation" Like many evangelical Christians, the Green family of Oklahoma City believes that America was founded as a Christian nation, based on a "biblical worldview." But the Greens are far from typical evangelicals in other ways. The billionaire owners of Hobby Lobby, a huge nationwide chain of craft stores, the Greens came to national attention in 2014 after successfully suing the federal government over their religious objections to provisions of the Affordable Care Act. What is less widely known is that the Greens are now America's biggest financial supporters of Christian causes--and they are spending hundreds of millions of dollars in an ambitious effort to increase the Bible's influence on American society. In Bible Nation, Candida Moss and Joel Baden provide the first in-depth investigative account of the Greens' sweeping Bible projects and the many questions they raise. Bible Nation tells the story of the Greens' rapid acquisition of an unparalleled collection of biblical antiquities; their creation of a closely controlled group of scholars to study and promote their collection; their efforts to place a Bible curriculum in public schools; and their construction of a $500 million Museum of the Bible near the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Bible Nation reveals how these seemingly disparate initiatives promote a very particular set of beliefs about the Bible--and raise serious ethical questions about the trade in biblical antiquities, the integrity of academic research, and more. Bible Nation is an important and timely account of how a vast private fortune is being used to promote personal faith in the public sphere--and why it should matter to everyone.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. From an award-winning biblical scholar, the story of how enslaved people created, gave meaning to, and spread the message of the New Testament, shaping the very foundations of Christianity in ways both subtle and profound. For the past two thousand years, Christian tradition, scholarship, and pop culture have credited the authorship of the New Testament to a select group of men: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and Paul. But hidden behind these named and sainted individuals are a cluster of unnamed, enslaved coauthors and collaborators. These essential workers were responsible for producing the earliest manuscripts of the New Testament: making the parchment on which the texts were written, taking dictation, and refining the words of the apostles. And as the Christian message grew in influence, it was enslaved missionaries who undertook the arduous journey across the Mediterranean and along dusty roads to move Christianity to Rome, Spain, and North Africa--and into the pages of history. The impact of these enslaved contributors on the spread of Christianity, the development of foundational Christian concepts, and the making of the Bible was enormous, yet their role has been almost entirely overlooked until now. Filled with profound revelations both for what it means to be a Christian and for how we read individual texts themselves, God's Ghostwriters is a groundbreaking and rigorously researched book about how enslaved people shaped the Bible, and with it all of Christianity. Winner of the 2026 Grawemeyer Award in Religion | A 2025 Nautilus Book Awards Silver Winner.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The Myth of Martyrdom introduces readers to the notion of historical martyrdom, and goes on to dissect the origin of persecution myths throughout the Christian tradition. According to early Christians, they lived in constant fear of persecution. The brutality of Roman treatment of Christians is shocking: girls sent to brothels to be gang-raped, young mothers stripped naked and thrown to wild animals, and fragile old men tortured and burned alive, all for no reason other than that they were Christians. Yet, despite these horrors, and out of love for Jesus, Christians stood resolutely against the might of the Roman Empire. They would not betray Christ; they would rather die than sacrifice their religious convictions. The problem with the idealization of Christian martyrdom is that it isn't true. While some individual cases of martyrdom are authentic, there was no systematic persecution of Christians during the first three hundred years of the faith as is popularly believed. These martyrdom stories, rather, were exaggerated, invented, or forged many years later as evangelistic propaganda or as a fund raising technique to build churches. When modern Christians claim to be "persecuted" they connect themselves to this earlier tradition. Moss argues that the rhetoric of persecution and martyrdom is a powerful way of silencing dissenters. Just as the early churches used martyrdom to exclude heretics, today martyrdom is used to condemn others as enemies and opponents. Yet the idea that Christians have always "battled" others and been "persecuted" by others is a myth.…
