Oriental Porcelain in The Netherlands, held at the Groninger Museum from November 2003 to May 2004.; In The Netherlands, it is not unusual to display an old Chinese dish against a wall or to have Oriental teaware in a cupboard, but this is nonetheless exceptional. Nowhere else in the West is Chinese and Japanese porcelain so clearly a part of daily life. Asian porcelain has graced interiors in The Netherlands for centuries, largely due to the enormous quantities imported during the 17th and 18th centuries by the VOC (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie, Dutch East India Company). Many Dutch museums thus include splendid examples of Chinese and Japanese export porcelain in their collections. This book introduces some of the most beauti- ful and interesting pieces from the following four museums: Haags Gemeentemuseum, the Groninger Museum, the Princessehof Leeuwarden and the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. Besides an overview of Oriental export porcelain since the 14th century, this combined presentation by these museums also emphasises The Netherlands' remarkable wealth in this area. A brief introduction to each museum's collec- tion of Oriental porcelain and its provenance is followed by a selection of fifteen excellent examples from their collections. Summary:When the Dutch East India Company was established in 1602, it lost no time in setting up trading posts throughout Asia. They secured shipping links - between the individual countries and with the Netherlands - and supp…lied large quantities of spices, tea, porcelain and Indian cotton in a constant stream. These trade goods from Asia were highly sought-after and left an enduring mark on European eating habits, dress and interior design. The Company's employees not infrequently traded on their own account in a wide range of relatively expensive products made by Asian craftsmen. They often had them made to order and shipped them back to the Netherlands - sometimes as contraband - on Company vessels. These costly Oriental objects were so greatly admired that connoisseurs came to the Netherlands from all over Europe to acquire them. Asian art was a source of inspiration for western craftsmen and an important influence on the European view of the world. Nevertheless Europeans soon felt the need to change the appearance of the products to suit their own tastes, and from this developed an exciting fusion of cultures.
