The American edition, comprising of 421 pages of text and a 4-page catalogue, was published only later that year (New York, Harper and Brothers). John Elliot Cairnes (1824-1875), Irish economist. At the time of his death he was generally regarded as the leading British economist and the last defender of the classical school.
