Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. A fine start on a collection of various (and variant) editions of Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, most being in no worse than Very Good condition, some being Near Fine, with special issues and flaws noticed below. The subject and author of the tomes comprising the collection, Omar Khayyam (or Khayyami)… was born, likely at Nishapur, in the Persian northeast, somewhere in the 11th century from 1025-1050 A.D. His surname Khayyam means "tent-maker" in Persian. The bibliography consulted is Ambrose G. Potter, A Bibliography Of The Rubaiyat Of Omar Khayyam Together With Kindred Matter In Prose And Verse Pertaining Thereto, published by Ingpen and Grant, London, 1929. The collection is comprised of the following: 1) RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM. (London: Bernard Quaritch, 1872), measuring 218 x 163 mm. (8 5/5" x 6 1/2"). Third Edition. Original publisher's maroon cloth over boards, roan-backed spine. Wear on spine, scuffing to spine head and foot, wear to joints, darkening of edges of cover, but still nearly an excellent copy of interior, sturdy, attractive. sewn-in silk-linen bookmark. [iii], iv-xxiv [1], 1-36 pp.; 2) RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM. (Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1878), measuring 175 x 130 mm. (6 3/4" x 5"). This is the First published American Edition from the Third London Edition. One of 500 copies printed. Bound in publisher's original reddish-brown cloth over boards, with gilt and black titling and decoration. Bookplate of Church Periodical Club, thus ex-libris, but not ex-library. Dark burgundy endpapers front and rear. Red-stamped page-edges all round. The bibliographer Potter says that this is a variant binding. Minor defects in the form of slight scuffing to tips, spine head and foot, else Near Fine. [3], 4-77 [1] pp.; 3) RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM. (Boston: L.C. Page and Company; London: Macmillan and Company, 1898), measuring 210 x 145 mm. (8 1/4" x 5 3/4"), an edition complete in two volumes. Edited by Nathan Haskell Dole. Multi-Variorum Edition. Bound in the original publisher's white cloth over boards, with red and gilt decoration, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, publisher's red oil-cloth dust jacket, quite fine, sturdy, substantial. Eight illustrations by multiple artists. This edition, "Edward Fitzgerald's Version," so-called for comparing "English, French, German, Italian, and Danish translations" to Fitzgerald's version. Dust jacket spines a bit sunned, otherwise a beautiful copy of the first trade edition of "the first extensive scientific edition," and thus itself a collectible. Volume I: clxxvii, [3], 3-203 pp.; Volume II consists wholly of appendixes, indexes, another nine fine illustrations; frontis matter, 210-655 pp.; 5) THE RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM. (Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1900), measuring 210 x 153 mm. (8 1/4 x 6"). Translated by Edward FitzGerald, E.H. Whinfield, and Justin Huntly McCarthy. Boun in publisher's navy cloth with quite elaborate gilt decoration, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Fine Introduction by Jessie B. Rittenhouse. Owner's signature at endpaper in the form of a penciled gift notation. Spine rubbed, dulled slightly but still attractive, rear cover a bit grubby, slight dings to board fore-edges, else with a beautiful cloth decoration to front cover. Fine black-and-white engraving of FitzGerald at frontis, captioned and tissue-guarded. xl, 1-244 pp.; 6) BJERREGAARD, C.H.A., Translator. SUFI INTERPRETATIONS OF THE QUATRAINS OF OMAR KHAYYAM AND FITZGERALD. (New York: J.F. Taylor and Company, 1902), printed for them by the Tudor Press, measuring 306 x 240 mm. (12 1/2" x 9 3/8"). Bound most handsomely in the publisher's original gray paper over boards, fore- and tail-edges untrimmed. French-fold text. Spine lettering faded (as on all copies), scuffing to spine head and foot, otherwise clean, unmarked, bright, attractive of interior. Full-page plate at frontis, tissue-protected, with second title page, also with title vignette, with Preface in unusual font also by C.H.A. Bjerregard, the then Head Librarian of the New York Public Library. Soft, sumptuous, sturdy hand-made paper, lightly waffled, and with text in red and black decorated framed borders. Unpaginated, but with Epilogue and all manner of devices and writerly features. All in, an uber-attractive edition; 7) THOMPSON, EBEN FRANCIS, Translator. THE QUATRAINS OF OMAR KHAYYAM. (Worcester, Massachusetts: The Commonwealth Press, 1906), measuring 248 x 168 mm. (9 3/4" x 6 1/2"). This is a First Edition Thus, one of only 435 copies signed by the editor.
