Good.First and only edition. RARE in Commerce.Alexander Robertson of Struan (c. 16701749) was the 13th Chief of Clan Donnachaidh (Clan Robertson). Known as the "Poet-Chief," he uniquely fought in all three major Jacobite uprisings to restore the exiled Stuart kings. His life was defined by fierce loyalty, military rebellions, and long years of exile in France. Born into a family devoted to the Stuart monarchy, Robertson was educated at the University of St. Andrews. In 1688, he succeeded his elder brother as clan chief. A year later he left his studies to join the Jacobite rising of 1689. He was captured shortly after the Battle of Dunkeld, but eventually managed to escape or was released. Following the collapse of the rising, he was officially branded a traitor by the government and forced to flee to France, where he lived in exile for 13 years. Robertson returned to Scotland in 1703 and received an unofficial pardon. When the Jacobite rising of 1715 broke out, he rallied 500 of his clansmen to support the Earl of Mar. He fought at the bloody Battle of Sheriffmuir, where he was taken prisoner again in 1716. His clansmen rescued him and he fled back to France. Despite his advanced age, Robertson returned to Scotland to support the final Jacobite rebellion of 1745 ("The '45"), led by Bonnie Prince Charlie. Though considered an eccentric and a notorious teetotaler-hater who never married, he remained a highly beloved figure among his people. He died peacefully in 1749 and was buried in the family tomb at Struan. His funeral was legendaryan estimated 2,000 clansmen marched 18 miles behind his coffin to carry him to his final resting place. Robertson is most famous in Scottish history as the only person definitively recorded as participating in all three major Jacobite rebellions. During his long periods of exile, he spent his time writing poetry in English, Gaelic, French, and Latin. Most of his poetry was not published in his lifetime. Because of his literary contributions and Highland heritage, he is remembered as one of the most colorful and enduring figures in Clan Robertson's history.

First edition of La Sulamitide printed by Antonio de Rossi in Rome in 1732; Rossi printed a second edition in 1733 and a third in 1739. Following editions were made with Lelio dalla Volpe in 1740. Giuseppe Maria Ercolani was an Italian poet and prelate, born at Sinigaglia about 1690. La Sulamitide, or "The Shulamite," was one of Ercolani's most admired poetic works, together with Maria (1725), yet he published under the pseudonym "Neralco." The arcadian poem La Sulamitide is set as a dramatic five-act play with the biblical king Solomon as the main character and his love interest, the Shulamite woman and heroine of the Song of Songs, and the shepherd who was construed to have been her first love. The book of the Old Testament, and inspiration for Ercolani's drama, is usually interpreted as a religious allegory of God's love for faithful believers, or for the human soul. Hence, the La Sulamitide has also been interpreted as a sort of sacred drama, retaining many aspects of an allegorical reading. The allegorical illustrations throughout are finely engraved works of art in miniature in the style of the late Italian Baroque by Parisian-born engraver Jean-Charles Allet (Joannes Carolus Allet or Sculptor Aerarius). Allet was a prolific engraver and spent most of his life at the court in Sardinia and later Rome; he died the sameyear this edition appeared. This copy is bound in an attractive, period armorial calf doubtless belonging in the libraries of European elite.

Numbered in the image, lower center: 3. Four lines in Latin, divided into two columns: "Haec alia est facies rerum, sic vertitur ordo/ Post tot delicias subeunt morbusque…dolorque./ Mutantur laetis tristia, grata malis/ Nempe solet Nemesis redere iusta vices.". Brilliant, richly-inked, early impression, printing sharp and crisp, with excellent contrasts and remarkable clarity, with the support lines along the text distinct. Like most of the surviving copies, with the number in the lower margin, as described by Franken. Slim margins around the border, in very fine condition. A print of great rarity, especially in such fine condition. This plate by Crispijn de Passe II is one of a set of four illustrating the biblical parable of Lazarus and the rich man. The story, from the Gospel of Luke (16:19-31), tells of an extremely wealthy man who shows no compassion when the poor, leprous beggar Lazarus begs him for bread and water. After his death, the rich man is sent to hell, where he is punished for his greed and heartlessness, whereas the pious and humble Lazarus is taken to heaven. It reminds us that earthly wealth is of no consequence after death and that those who suffer in this life will receive comfort in the next. The episode depicted here is The Dying Hour of the Rich Man. Even as the doctor attends the man on his deathbed, the notary in the foreground is already dividing the old man's estate, while to the far left a demon cheerfully welcomes him to the hereafter with music. The inscription reads: "This is the other face of things. Thus is the order reversed. Sad things are turned to happy ones; good things to evil. After so many joys come pain and illness. / Indeed, retribution (Nemesis) is wont to return just punishments." The verses are possibly by the Dutch antiquarian and humanist Aernout van Buchel (1565-1641), whose monogram appears next to the verses on the second plate in the series. The other prints in the series (Hollstein 3, 4, and 6) depict: 1. Lazarus in the house of the rich man; 2. Feast in the house of the Rich Man; and 4. The Rich Man in Hell. The design for the fourth plate is the work of De Passe the Elder. (Franken 1062-1065) The Artist: Crispijn de Passe the Younger came from a large, distinguished Dutch family of professional engravers and was trained in the workshop of his father, Cripsijn de Passe the Elder (who published this print). He was known for his remarkable handling of the burin, of which this engraving is an excellent example. The artist modeled both the interior and the figures in costume on contemporary tastes, offering insights into the elegant lifestyle of the seventeenth-century upper classes. De Passe worked in his father's Utrecht workshop beginning in 1612 until his departure for Paris around 1618. He worked in Paris (with some interruptions) until 1629, at which time he resumed work in Utrecht. In 1639 he removed to Amsterdam, where he died circa 1670. The Dives and Lazarus series must have been made before 1618, when Crispijn the Younger left for Paris (See Veldman, Crispijn de Passe and his Progeny, p. 221). The Publisher: "The elder De Passe (15651637) began his career as an engraver and publisher in Antwerp; forced to leave because of his A.

Engraved pictorial title of Heraclitus and Democritus and 2 illustrations and 19 circular emblematic engravings partly by Crispijn van de Passe the Younger. Contemporary stamped v…ellum with central arabesque ornament; (some light browning, some margins sliced in final quire but present, few corners chipped). Rear pastedown with inscription from the library of Van Isaac le Long and dated 1744. Modern armorial bookplate of Bibliotheque I.G. Schorsch on the front pastedown. Dawson's Bookshop label also affixed on rear pastedown. First edition and scarce variant copy of this classic Dutch poetry and emblem work by Zierikzee native Adriaan Hoffer, which Benesch described as, ".adorned with etchings which in themselves are perfect little works of art, although only slightly connected with the text" (Benesch, Rubens to Daumier p. 39). Hoffer's work contains poems comprising the author's self-commentary, Biblical quotes, and notably mentioned the victory of the Spanish silverfleet by Pieter Heyn in 1628, all in verse. Largely written in the vernacular, Hoffer supplemented Latin notes to his poetry through ample marginal references. Hoffer was a wealthy man and book collector with many connections in the Zierikzee community. The Nederduytsche Poëmata was his most important work, which sought to restrict the interest of natural inquiry to its edifying potential. This edition is notable for its engravings by Crispijn van de Passe the Younger, a talented engraver who inherited his father's style and repertoire and who remains inextricably linked to seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking. Not much else is known about the influence of Hoffer's Nederduytsche Poëmata or "Dutch Poems," but an earlier work of the same title was written by Daniel Heinsius (1580-1655) and published in Amsterdam by Willem Jansson in 1618.
