First edition. *The 40-gun ship Wager was detailed to accompany Anson on his famous voyage of circumnavigation in 1740, in search of Spanish treasure ships. Rounding the Horn, Wager was driven ashore on the Pacific coast of Tierra del Fuego. The surviving crew split into three mutinous factions. Midshipman Byron (future grandfather of the poet), aligned himself with the ship's captain.
