Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 174 pages. Octavo (8" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First edition. When retired English Colonel plans a nostalgic walking tour in the South of France, his wife engages Kenworthy to mind him. Is this an unpardonable breach of personal privacy? Will the assignment prove a damp squib? Or is Colonel Neville's purpose as sinister as it sometimes seems? Kenworthy finds him in turn eccentric, domineering, secretive and on occasion bumblingly inefficient: then he loses him. Murder follows, and Kenworthy, helped by Monique Colin, a delectable young private eye from an agency in Nice, traces a trail back to the wartime Resistance, a world of pride, passions, jealousies and shame, in with the harshness of reality was sometimes more powerful than the heroism. Condition: Corners bumped else a very good to fine copy in a near fine jacket.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 183 pages. octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black boards with gilt lettering to spine in original publisher's jacket. First edition. Retired Superintendent Kenworthy (The Green Frontier, etc.), sharp and subtle as ever, with another complex assignment: this one in the Pennine village of Peak Low, where rich dilettante Lord Furnival has elected to stage a Passion, with Christ played by thoroughly unwholesome rock-star Wayne Lamer. Madge Oldroyd, the play's Mary Magdalene, plagued by a series of nasty practical jokes, has walked out; ex-army security officer Colonel Cantrell and local police can't find the culprit; tensions and enmities rage, and then Lamer, forbidden to drive, fatally injures research assistant Ricarda Mommsen in a car crash, disappears, and is found dead days later. Kenworthy acts as the production's liaison with local police, chases down Larner's longtime enemy Alf Tandy and finally sorts it all out, in a flat, prosaic ending. Very English, very complicated, but lacking drive and cohesion. Condition: Jacket light rubbing to extremities else a near fine in like jacket.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 167 pages. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black boards with green gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First American edition. Hilton (Corridors of Guilt, etc.) has a weakness for baroque plots--and this outing for Inspector Kenworthy is his most rococo confection yet: implausible yet entertaining. It all centers on Kenworthy's colleague Anne Lawson, a young, pregnant newlywed who is working on the computerization of the district's police files. But Anne is haunted by scarcely-remembered events from her past; then her mother commits suicide (or is it murder?). And Anne's half-memories are being stimulated by some of the old police files--particularly those having to do with the 20-year-old kidnapping of Edwina Booth, baby daughter of a famous novelist: the infant was never found, and the baby's mother was killed during the aborted ransom-payoff. Is there a connection between Anne's current woes and this bygone tragedy? So it seems--especially when Anne is then herself kidnapped by an unsavory couple who are using her in a new exploitation of the old crime. But who's really behind it all? Well, two murders later Kenworthy puts it all together. . . and Anne can finally exorcise the past. A taut, intriguing little puzzle--even if you won't believe a word of it. Condition: Very good to fine in a fine dust jacket.
