Original black blind-stamped cloth with bright gilt lettering on the spine ("Companion"). Very good condition, a tight, clean and unworn copy though with front free end paper missing.

Corners bumped with cardboard exposed there and at spots along edges of boards, a half dozen or so chips off cloth on spine. Internally, some soil and tanning on endpapers, previous owner's name and address, Mary E. Lawton Wickford R. I." (in pencil) , 1 ½ inch water(? ) stain on lower edge of front endpapers, which is evident, but to a lesser extent, in-text, shaken, otherwise tight, clean, relatively crisp and unmarked.
